Eagles drop heartbreaker to Rogers State

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 12, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian mostly has controlled its series against in-state rival Rogers State since 2018, winning 11 of 14 games against the Hillcats before Saturday during that time frame.

Rogers State turned the tables on the Eagles on a brisk night at Tom Heath Field, dealing the Eagles a 1-0 loss in the Edmond Regional Festival. The Hillcats' All-America pitcher, Andrea Morales – who has had her struggles against OC through the years – threw a two-hit shutout and Chelsea Spain hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning for the game's only run.

No. 15 OC (5-2) hadn't lost at home to Rogers State (8-1) since the 2007 season, seven years before the Eagles' current softball facility opened. OC still leads the overall series against the Hillcats by a 32-19 count.

On a 36-degree night, Morales (5-0) and OC freshman Grace Anderson (1-1) engaged in a pitchers' duel throughout, with Anderson allowing only six hits and striking out five. Rogers State stranded two runners in both the first and third innings and had a runner thrown out at home in the second inning.

Rian Gamble had both of the Eagles' hits off Morales, who had seven strikeouts. The first came in the fourth inning and she stole second base, but Morales retired Whitney Walde and Aaliyah Brown to end the OC threat. Gamble singled and Walde reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth with two outs, but Morales coaxed a popup out of Brown.

With one out in the seventh, Spain sent a pitch from Anderson over the left-field wall. OC's Lindsey Stoeckel drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning, but Kelsey Gammage lined out to third base and Stoeckel was doubled off first base to end the game.

OC will wrap up the first weekend of the Edmond Regional Festival on Sunday with games against Missouri Southern at 12:45 p.m. and Southern Nazarene at 3 p.m.
