AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 12, 2022) – Two of Oklahoma Christian's most memorable basketball wins during the past five seasons have come at the expense of St. Edward's (Texas), but another wasn't forthcoming on Saturday afternoon.
St. Edward's led nearly all the way, including by double digits for most of the second half, while downing the Eagles 79-64 in the Recreation and Athletic Center.
OC (8-15, 4-8 Lone Star Conference) dropped into 13th place in the LSC standings, a half-game behind Texas A&M International. The top 12 teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the league tournament. St. Edward's (13-11, 7-7) figures to be one of those 12 teams.
OC took good care of the basketball on Saturday, committing only nine turnovers, but the Hilltoppers were even better with only five turnovers. St. Edward's also hit 14 of 32 3-point attempts, including a 5-of-9 performance from behind the arc by Bennett Mohn, who scored 15 points. Uche Dibiamaka led the Hilltoppers with 23 points.
The Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by
Anthony Johnson with 13 points, but OC couldn't match the Hilltoppers' firepower.
OC's only lead came in the first three minutes, but St. Edward's seized control with a 13-0 run and never trailed again. The Hilltoppers led 40-33 at halftime.
A basket by Johnson pulled the Eagles within 43-38 with 17:02 left, but OC came no closer.
Moun'Tae Edmundson had 11 points and eight rebounds,
Drew Tennial had 11 points and seven rebounds and
D.J. Walter added 10 to go with seven rebounds for OC. Daniel Venzant had 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for St. Edward's.
The Eagles will return home to host their final two home games of the season next week, against Texas-Permian Basin on Thursday and Angelo State (Texas) on Saturday.
