Lubbock Christian takes pair of narrow wins over OC

EDMOND, Okla. (Feb. 12, 2022) – Lubbock Christian (Texas) took a pair of narrow wins from Oklahoma Christian on a chilly Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 7-5 and 3-1.

LCU (5-2, 5-2 Lone Star Conference) will try to finish off a four-game sweep of OC (3-4, 3-4) in the series finale on Sunday at noon. The series is being played at Central Oklahoma's baseball field because of ongoing construction at OC's Dobson Field.

In the opener – which started with the air temperature at 31 degrees and a wind chill in the teens – a two-run second-inning home run by Will Buchholz put Lubbock Christian ahead. Blake Empkey gave OC its first lead of the series with a three-run homer over the right-field wall in the third inning.

But as quickly as the Eagles took the lead, the Chaparrals seized it right back. Buchholz doubled to lead off the top of the fourth inning and scored on a single by Caden Hensley, tying the game. Then Lubbock Christian took advantage of two fielding errors on sacrifice bunt attempts and a wild pitch to add three more runs in the inning off OC starter Andrew Alonzo (1-1).

Down 6-3, OC loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but managed only two runs as reliever Cannon Davis (1-0) entered to shut down the threat. Davis allowed only two hits and struck out four in four innings of work.

The Chaparrals received a complete-game pitching performance from Shandon Herrera (2-0) in the second game, as he struck out seven batters. OC's only run came in the sixth inning, a solo home run by Tanner White.

Lubbock Christian scored all three of its runs in the second inning against OC starter Ryan Hill (0-1). The Eagles' bullpen (Jacob Mattox, Hayden Boyd, Bob Britton and Kyle Higgins) combined to allow only two hits in 5 1/3 innings of work, but after the first inning, OC advanced only two baserunners as far as third base (including White).
