OC falls to WT; game vs. Texas A&M-Commerce on hold

COMMERCE, Texas (May 21, 2021) – Rain has plagued the NCAA Division II South Central Regional softball tournament and on Friday night, that meant No. 4 Oklahoma Christian's postseason fate was put on hold overnight.

All of one inning of an elimination game between OC (38-8) and No. 10 TAMUC (31-17) was played at John Cain Family Softball Complex before umpires postponed the game until Saturday at 10 a.m. The game was scoreless at the time umpires halted the action.

Rain also delayed the start of the winners' bracket final between OC and No. 12 West Texas A&M by more than three hours earlier in the day. West Texas A&M (37-10) started quickly once the game started, scoring four first-inning runs en route to a 6-2 win over the Eagles.

OC will face a challenging task Saturday. To win the regional title, the Eagles would first have to beat the tournament's home team, fifth-seeded TAMUC, for a second time in three days. Then they'd have to beat second-seeded West Texas A&M twice. It's been six years since the Eagles have had to play three games in one day.

The rough first inning damaged the Eagles' chances against second-seeded West Texas A&M. Ruby Salzman hit a solo home run – a line drive that snaked over the left-field fence – and three batters later, Gabriella Valforte hit a three-run shot over the left-center field wall off OC starter Kali Crandall (24-3) to make it 4-0.

Lindsey Stoeckel's two-run homer over the centerfield wall scored Kylie Janzen (who had walked) and cut the Eagles' deficit in half in the fourth inning. But the Eagles missed other opportunities to score, leaving two runners on base in both the third and fifth innings.

Valforte sealed the win for the Buffaloes in the fifth with a two-run double to right field. Emilee Wilson (14-5) picked up the win for West Texas A&M, pitching 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Kyra Lair.

"We just got off to a bad start," OC coach Shanon Hays. "We had a hard time finding where that particular ump wanted it and by the time we figured it out a little bit, we got behind. We threw some bad pitches and they hit them. Hats off to them – our mistakes, they capitalized on. They're a good team. We've got to be better. If you're going to beat a good team, you've got to play good and we didn't."
