SILVER CITY, N.M. (April 18, 2021) – The milestones – both team and individual – fell in bunches for No. 10-ranked Oklahoma Christian on Sunday against Western New Mexico.
OC swept the Mustangs 7-3 and 18-9 – the latter in five innings – extending the Eagles' winning streak to a program-record 14 games. The Eagles' previous mark was 13 straight wins, set in 1998 and matched during the 2003, 2011 and 2014 softball seasons.
OC sophomore pitcher
Kali Crandall – who leads NCAA Division II in pitching wins – also joined a pair of elite lists during the first game. She recorded her 20th win of the season, only the sixth time any OC pitcher has done so. She joined OC Athletic Hall of Famer Leah Carrell (who did it three times), Shea Coats and Rebecca Robinett in that group.
Crandall, a right-hander from Artesia, N.M., also increased her career strikeout total to 401, making her only the fourth OC pitcher to record at least 400 Ks. Carrell (698 from 1998-2001),
Madison Hagood (438 from 2016-19) and Coats (403 from 2014-15) are the other three.
OC (31-5, 21-3 Lone Star Conference) remained in second place in the LSC standings and seems to have loads of positive momentum heading into the biggest week of the season, in which the Eagles will host league-leading (and No. 3-ranked) Texas-Tyler on Friday and third-place (and No. 6) Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday.
Texas-Tyler, in its final season of transition into Division II, isn't eligible for the conference tournament. The highest-finishing eligible team during the regular season will serve as the event's host.
OC is one of only four Division II teams this season with at least 30 wins, along with Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.), Indianapolis (Ind.) and Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Against Western New Mexico (1-23, 1-23), the Eagles hit seven home runs in the doubleheader, with two each by
Brooklin Bain (both in the second game, one a grand slam) and
Katelyn Dunckel (one in each game).
In the opener,
Aaliyah Brown's three-run homer in the second inning off Western New Mexico starter Vanessa Hunt (0-10) put the Eagles ahead 4-0 and the Mustangs came no closer than three runs the rest of the game. Dunckel's solo home run in the seventh provided some insurance for Crandall (20-1), who went the distance, allowing seven hits and striking out three.
The Eagles jumped on Western New Mexico starter Brittany Santellanes (0-4) for 11 first-inning runs in the second game. Bain's grand slam and a two-run homer by fellow freshman
Kylie Janzen highlighted that outburst, during which the Eagles had eight hits.
The Mustangs did score five runs off OC starter
Bailey Turner in the first inning (Samantha Corral and Nikki Medina each hit a two-run double), but OC added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings (the latter on Bain's solo homer) before a four-run fifth inning keyed by a solo home run by Dunckel and a three-run homer by
Brianna Robinson.
Lindsey Stoeckel (3-0) pitched the final three innings in relief for OC to pick up the win, allowing three hits and one run while striking out four.
