OKLAHOMA CITY (April 25, 2021) – When you're good, oftentimes good luck follows, and that proved to be the case for No. 10-ranked Oklahoma Christian on a sunny, windy Sunday afternoon at Tom Heath Field.
In front of the biggest home crowd in years, the Eagles won a pair of walkoff extra-inning thrillers against No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce – 2-1 in the opener on a dropped popup in the eighth and 5-4 with a two-run rally in the eighth, keyed by
Brianna Robinson and
Lindsey Stoeckel – to extend their school-record winning streak to 16 games.
OC (33-5, 23-3 Lone Star Conference) also moved closer to potentially hosting the LSC softball tournament. The Eagles are in second place behind No. 3 Texas-Tyler (31-5, 25-1), which is ineligible to host, and hold a three-game lead in the loss column on TAMUC (25-12, 18-6), plus the tiebreaker, with four games remaining for OC.
Both TAMUC and OC have doubleheaders remaining against Texas-Tyler and Cameron, while TAMUC also will host a doubleheader against St. Edward's (Texas). OC now is 10-3 this season against ranked opponents.
Kali Crandall (22-1) picked up two more wins in the circle for the Eagles, allowing only five hits and one earned run in 10 innings while moving back into the NCAA Division II lead for pitching wins this season.
The sophomore right-hander from Artesia, N.M., had 14 strikeouts, raising her career total to 415 and moving her into third place on OC's career list in that category, past Shea Coats (402 from 2014-15). With 22 wins, Crandall is now tied for third place on OC's single-season list for wins with OC Athletic Hall of Famer Leah Carrell, who had 22 wins in 2000.
Crandall was masterful in the opener, striking out a season-high 11 batters.
Whitney Walde walked and scored on a single by Stoeckel in the second inning to put OC ahead, although the Eagles left the bases loaded against TAMUC starter Alyssa LeBlanc.
The Lions tied the game in the sixth, when Madison Schaefer drew a one-out walk and LeBlanc followed with a double to left-center field. Crandall then retired the next eight batters to end the game.
In the eighth, Walde singled to left field with two outs and
Hannah Pate followed with a bloop double to left-center field that sent Walde to third base. Stoeckel then popped up just in front of home plate, but LeBlanc – trying to field the popup as a pitcher – had it bounce off her glove to the ground as Walde crossed the plate with the winning run.
The Lions took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second game with three unearned runs off OC reliever
Bailey Turner, two scoring on a two-out single to left field by Schaefer. But OC began chipping away in the fifth, when Stoeckel hit a solo home run over the left-field fence off TAMUC starter Emily Otto.
Katelyn Dunckel tripled and scored in the sixth to pull OC within 3-2, and down to their final out in the seventh, the Eagles tied the game when Dunckel's single to left scored her older sister,
Brie Dunckel, from second base, after
Brie Dunckel had reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
Uxua Medrego reached second base on an error with one out in the top of the eighth and scored on a double to left by Schaefer off Crandall. TAMUC coach Richie Bruister chose to put LeBlanc back in the circle to start the bottom of the eighth and Robinson greeted her with a solo home run to center field, again tying the game.
LeBlanc (14-8) then hit pinch-hitter
Karrah Dean with a pitch and
Hampton Hays pinch-ran for Dean. Hays took second on a groundout by
Brooklin Bain and advanced to third on a fly ball to right field by
Kylie Janzen. Stoeckel then delivered another clutch hit, as her soft liner fell just in front of centerfielder Mackenzi Dugi, scoring Hays.
OC will host Cameron on Saturday before hosting Texas-Tyler on May 4 to close the regular season.
