ODESSA, Texas (April 16, 2021) – No. 10-ranked Oklahoma Christian rolled to a pair of run-rule wins on Friday, routing Texas-Permian Basin 13-0 and 16-1 at the UTPB Softball Complex.
OC (29-5, 19-3 Lone Star Conference) extended its winning streak to 12 games – its longest since 2014 – as seven different players drove in at least two runs in the doubleheader, with freshman
Kylie Janzen leading the way with five, four on a first-inning grand slam in the second game.
OC remained in sole possession of second place in the LSC, trailing only Texas-Tyler, which has a 19-1 league record but is ineligible to host the conference tournament. The highest-seeded eligible team at the end of the regular season will serve as the tournament host.
The Eagles seized control of the opener against UTPB (4-28, 2-20) with a five-run second inning, with
Lindsey Stoeckel hitting a two-run single to center field and
Abi LaValley driving in two more runs with a double to left-center off UTPB pitcher Becky Berth (1-12).
OC finished off the run-rule win with a six-run sixth inning, which
Daelyn Denny capped with a two-run single up the middle. OC pitcher
Kali Crandall (19-1), the NCAA Division II leader in wins, threw five innings, allowing only three hits while striking out five.
Brooklin Bain pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Eagles.
In the second game, the Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the first, with walks to Bain and
Katelyn Dunckel sandwiching a bunt single by
Brie Dunckel. Janzen followed with her grand slam off UTPB pitcher Abby Cousins (0-6) and the Eagles never looked back. Janzen now has 39 RBIs this season, ranking her third in the LSC in that statistical category.
Brianna Robinson's two-run home run keyed a six-run third inning for OC and
Aaliyah Brown hit another two-run homer during a six-run fourth inning, after
Tristyn Hamilton had delivered a two-run single. Freshman
Tara Stewart's first career home run finished the inning and made it 16-0.
OC pitcher
Bailey Turner (7-3) struck out five batters and allowed one run in four innings.
The Eagles will play their final road games of the regular season on Sunday at LSC rival Western New Mexico (1-21, 1-21). The Mustangs have lost 21 straight games after winning their season opener.
OC's final three LSC doubleheaders will be at home – on April 23 vs. No. 3 Texas-Tyler, April 25 vs. No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce and May 1 vs. Cameron.
