Josh Imhoff became the first Oklahoma Christian bowler to qualify for national singles competition in the program's three-season history, finishing fifth in the Intercollegiate Singles Championship Sectional Qualifier on Friday at USA Bowl.
Imhoff, a junior from Cabot, Ark., posted a score of 1,222 over six games to finish fifth in the 145-man field, with the top six advancing to the ISC, set for May 5 at the Spectrum Entertainment Complex in Wyoming, Mich.
Imhoff has won two tournaments this season and entered the event ranked seventh nationally in traditional scoring average at 219.21 per game. He started strong Friday, rolling a 244 in his first game and following that with a 207. After games of 189 and 213, he stood in second place, and then hung on over the final two games, with scores of 187 and 182.
He eventually finished 16 pins ahead of the seventh-place bowler. The overall winner was Alec Keplinger of Wichita State at 1,277.
Dalton Smith, a freshman from Blanchard, Okla., was OC's second-highest finisher in singles, placing 30th at 1,114, with a high game of 217. Michael Gredler, a sophomore from Killeen, Texas, was 34th at 1,104, with a high game of 226.
The Eagles now will turn their attention to the Intercollegiate Team Championship Sectional Qualifier, which will consist of 40 Baker games – 20 each on Saturday and Sunday. The top four teams in the 19-team field will advance to the ITC, set for May 6-8, also in Wyoming, Mich.
