SAN ANTONIO (March 21, 2021) – Freshman
Kylie Janzen homered twice and drove in five runs as No. 8-ranked Oklahoma Christian split a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at St. Mary's (Texas).
Janzen hit a solo homer and a three-run shot as the Eagles won the opener 6-0 and drove in another run in the second game, in which OC led early but eventually fell 9-6 to the Rattlers.
OC (17-5, 9-3 Lone Star Conference) remained in third place in the league standings but now trails co-leaders Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas-Tyler by three games and is tied with Texas A&M-Kingsville.
In the opener, OC sophomore pitcher
Kali Crandall (11-1) bounced back from a rough outing on Friday in a loss at St. Edward's (Texas), handcuffing the Rattlers on three hits and recording her first shutout since opening day on Feb. 4 against Southern Nazarene. Crandall had seven strikeouts and five walks.
Janzen, a freshman from Moore, Okla., hit a solo homer over the right-field fence off St. Mary's starter Sara Robertson in the second inning and added a three-run shot during a four-run fifth inning for the Eagles. Another freshman,
Brooklin Bain, went 3 for 3 for OC.
St. Mary's (10-12, 6-6) won a wild second game, in which the teams were tied 5-5 after three innings. Reba Reyes put the Rattlers ahead in the fourth with a solo homer off OC starter
Bailey Turner (4-3) and the Rattlers added three runs in the sixth to make it 9-5.
Daelyn Denny led off the seventh inning for OC with a homer and
Brie Dunckel followed with a single, but Robertson (3-4) – who pitched the final six innings – settled down to retire the next three batters to seal the win for the Rattlers.
OC will return home for a nonconference doubleheader against Arkansas Tech on Wednesday before LSC doubleheaders at Midwestern State (Texas) on Friday and Texas Woman's next Sunday.
