OKLAHOMA CITY (March 24, 2021) – It hasn't taken long – less than two months – for Oklahoma Christian freshman
Kylie Janzen to establish herself as one of the Lone Star Conference's top hitters and run producers.
The former Southmoore High School star continued the strong start to her collegiate softball career on Wednesday, driving in four of the Eagles' five runs as they swept Arkansas Tech 2-1 and 3-1 in a nonconference doubleheader at Tom Heath Field.
No. 16-ranked OC (19-5) also picked up a pair of strong pitching performances, with
Kali Crandall recording a complete-game win in the opener and then saving the win in the second game for
Lindsey Stoeckel, who'd pitched three shutout innings in relief of
Bailey Turner.
Crandall (12-2) allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out nine in the first game. Janzen put OC ahead with a run-scoring single in the first inning off Arkansas Tech starter Shannon Lasey (3-3) and the Eagles went up 2-0 in the second when
Daelyn Denny's sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner
Tristyn Hamilton.
Arkansas Tech (8-11) turned a walk, a hit batter and a single by Abbie Cain into a run in the third inning, but the Golden Suns only had one runner advance as far as third base over the final four innings. Crandall retired seven straight batters to end the game.
Arkansas Tech pitcher Lexy Taylor (1-2) went the distance in the second game, giving up only five hits. Unfortunately for her, three of those came in the fourth inning.
Brie Dunckel led off with an infield single and
Brooklin Bain singled to left field before Janzen sent a shot over the right-field wall for her team-high fifth home run of the season. She also leads OC in batting average (.431) and RBIs (20).
Janzen's homer wiped out the Golden Suns' 1-0 lead. The pitching beneficiary for the Eagles was Stoeckel (2-0), who allowed only two hits in her three innings of work. Turner returned to the circle in the sixth inning after Makenzie Addis' leadoff infield single off Stoeckel and kept the Golden Suns from scoring.
Brooke Prewitt lead off the top of the seventh with a single for Arkansas Tech. Crandall then came out of the bullpen and – after a bit of drama, when the Golden Suns had two runners in scoring position with two outs – finished off her second save of the season as Caitlyn Wells flied out.
OC will return to LSC play this weekend, visiting Midwestern State (Texas) on Friday and Texas Woman's on Sunday for doubleheaders.
