AUSTIN, Texas (March 19, 2021) – After a tough-luck loss in the first game of a softball doubleheader at St. Edward's, No. 8-ranked Oklahoma Christian needed a bounce-back win, and
Bailey Turner delivered in the circle for the Eagles.
Turner pitched a complete-game four-hitter with seven strikeouts and her teammates produced just enough offense to lift OC to a 3-1 win at Diane Daniels Field. St. Edward's overcame a seven-run inning by the Eagles in the opener, rallying to win 8-7.
OC (18-2, 8-2 Lone Star Conference) fell behind in the first inning of the second game, when St. Edward's (7-7, 4-6) had two of its hits off Turner (4-2). But the senior right-hander allowed only four baserunners after that and stranded three of them at third base.
The Eagles took the lead against St. Edward's starter McKenna Leamon (3-5) in the third inning.
Brie Dunckel drew a leadoff walk and scored on a triple by
Katelyn Dunckel.
Katelyn Dunckel then scored on a single by
Abi LaValley to make it 2-1.
OC added an insurance run in the seventh inning when
Brooklin Bain also walked to lead off and later scored on a single by
Whitney Walde. The win ended a three-game losing streak to St. Edward's.
Jordan Neely's two-run double for the Hilltoppers keyed a three-run first inning in the opening game before OC answered with seven runs in the top of the second on only three hits, taking advantage of the wildness of St. Edward's starter Lauren Jaresh, who hit three batters before giving way to Cadie Belle Currie (3-1). Walde's three-run double down the right-field line was the big blow for the Eagles.
While Currie limited the Eagles to one hit the rest of the way, St. Edward's knocked out OC starter
Kali Crandall with four runs in the fifth, tying the game. The Hilltoppers scored off OC reliever
Lauren King (1-1) in the sixth, with Morgan Arcia delivering a run-scoring single, and the Eagles went down in order in the seventh.
The Eagles will visit St. Mary's (Texas) for a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
