Bronchos roll past Eagles in nonconference game

EDMOND, Okla. (March 16, 2021) – The road finally caught up with the Oklahoma Christian baseball team on Tuesday night.

A day after completing a three-game series against St. Edward's (Texas) that lasted four days in Austin, Texas, OC traveled across town to Central Oklahoma and looked exhausted. It showed, as UCO rolled to a 20-0 win over the Eagles at Wendell Simmons Field in a game shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

"We just got off to a bad start and it snowballed on us," OC coach Lonny Cobble said. "It was just a bad day all around for us. We didn't swing it very well and we didn't pitch it very well. It is what it is and you just live and learn and you go on. We're better than what we showed and we know that."

OC (8-6) had entered having won five straight road games, including the sweep at St. Edward's that helped lift the Eagles into the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's South Central Region poll at No. 10. But the Eagles managed only one hit – a fourth-inning single by Blake Empkey – against four UCO pitchers.

For the Bronchos (7-4), Kyle Crowl hit two three-run home runs and drove in seven runs, while Garrett Takamatsu hit two solo home runs and added a bases-loaded triple to finish with five RBIs.

UCO starter Brayden Nelson (3-0) earned the pitching while OC starter Chase Berberich (1-1) took the loss for the Eagles. OC gave up 20 runs in a game for the first time in 11 seasons.

OC will return home for a big Lone Star Conference series against No. 12-ranked West Texas A&M, which will start Friday at 6 p.m. The Eagles will get another shot at UCO at home on April 6.
