OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 6, 2021) – It's no doubt been a weird college basketball season, and one of the oddest facts about it for Oklahoma Christian was the Lady Eagles had a winning record on the road (with four wins) but hadn't managed to win in the friendly confines of the Eagles' Nest.
Their first home W of the 2020-21 campaign sure was impressive, however. Freshman
Brooklin Bain and senior
Maddison Collyer Ingraham each recorded a double-double and OC led most of the way in a decisive 65-49 decision on Saturday afternoon over Midwestern State (Texas), a team ranked sixth in this week's Division II Sports Information Directors Association South Central Region poll.
OC (5-6, 5-5 Lone Star Conference) snapped a three-game losing streak (all home games) and no doubt improved its standing in the point-rating system that will be used by the LSC this season to determine which eight teams qualify for the conference tournament. OC was ninth in the standings this week with a 2.938 score – just .02 behind Texas A&M-Kingsville – before splitting a pair of games against Midwestern State (8-4, 7-4).
Ingraham had 13 points and 11 assists, extending her lead atop the LSC in the latter category. She also increased her career total to 465 assists, moving past April Avila (456 from 1996-2000) into fifth place on OC's all-time list. She's just one assist from tying Tina Bowerman (1986-91) on that list.
Bain matched her career high with 25 points (on 9-of-13 shooting) and set a career high with 17 rebounds, the third-highest single-game total this season by a LSC player. She increased her season averages to 15.4 and 9.3, respectively. She ranks third in rebounding and fifth in scoring in the LSC this season and already has five career double-doubles, the same amount as Ingraham.
Ingraham made two 3-pointers in a 40-second span late in the first quarter to stake OC to its first double-digit lead and the Lady Eagles led 33-20 at halftime. OC's lead ballooned to 43-26 after a basket by
Kendall Blackburn with 4:19 left in the third quarter.
The Lady Eagles then went more than 5½ minutes without a field goal, but Midwestern State – which went just 1 of 20 from 3-point range and 20 of 68 (29.4 percent) from the field overall – wasn't able to take too much advantage of that drought.
The Mustangs closed within 46-38 on a basket by Brittney Fields with 6:51 left but OC responded with an 11-2 run and two free throws by Bain pushed the lead to 57-40 with 3:26 left.
Midwestern State had only one player score in double figures – Hannah Reynolds, who had 14 points.
OC's next games will be at St. Edward's (Texas) next Friday and Saturday. The Lady Eagles' next home game will be Feb. 16 against Texas Woman's.
