Peck’s buzzer-beater gives Lady Eagles dramatic win over Angelo State

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 22, 2021) – The shots had not been falling all game for Oklahoma Christian guard Tyra Peck, who entered the final 11.4 seconds on Monday against Angelo State (Texas) a dismal 1 of 6 from the field.

But the basketball found Peck on the right wing as the seconds dwindled away and this time, her 3-point shot was true as time expired, setting off a raucous celebration and giving the Lady Eagles a had-to-have-it 69-67 win over Angelo State in the Eagles' Nest.

"It was awesome," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "She hadn't been hitting the whole game. She really hadn't shot much … but she was doing a great job on defense. You've just got to be ready to let that (shot) go at the end and she was ready. She caught the ball and shot it and it was nothing but net. You catch and shoot and worry about it later."

OC (6-6, 6-5 Lone Star Conference) is battling for a spot in the LSC postseason tournament and entered the week seventh in the league's complicated point-ratings system, developed for use in this pandemic season because teams aren't playing balanced schedules. The Lady Eagles needed to finish off a season sweep of Angelo State (1-11, 1-11) and did, just barely.

Peck wasn't the only senior hero. Maddison Collyer Ingraham poured in 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to go with four assists, taking over for OC down the stretch when her team was struggling mightily. She scored all of the Lady Eagles' points during the final nine minutes before Peck's shot, including a clutch 3-pointer with 24.1 seconds left that briefly gave OC the lead before the Rambelles snatched it right back 12 seconds later.

Ingraham also moved past Tina Bowerman (who played from 1986 to 1991) into fourth place on OC's career assists chart with 468.

"I was hoping she'd move up that list," Findley said of Ingraham. "She deserves it. She plays so hard and the rest of the team follows her lead when she's playing like that. I'm just glad for all that she can get her senior year. Her 24 points tonight were huge because (no one else) was hitting. Maddie took it on her shoulders and she made it happen for the rest of the game."

OC led 51-40 after Kendall Blackburn's basket with 5:45 left in the third quarter, but Angelo State – with only seven players in uniform – then went on a 19-2 run and led 59-53 after Madison Honea beat the third-quarter buzzer with a 3-pointer.

Sawyer Loyd scored with 7:12 left to put her team ahead 63-58, but the Rambelles didn't score again until the 1:30 mark. OC wasn't able to take advantage. After Ingraham scored with 6:42 left, the Lady Eagles endured a five-minute scoreless stretch before a three-point play by Ingraham with 1:41 left tied the game at 63-63.

Sadie Misner, who led Angelo State with 15 points, scored on a drive with 1:30 left. Ingraham missed two free throws at the one-minute mark, but Kendra Levings and Tyra Peck teamed to steal the ball from Angelo State, leading to Ingraham's 3-pointer that put OC ahead 66-65.

Loyd, who had 12 points and eight assists, drove to the basket and curled in a layup with 12.2 seconds left, putting the Rambelles back up 67-66. OC called timeout with 11.4 seconds left and advanced the ball into the frontcourt.

Angelo State tried mightily to keep the ball out of Ingraham's hands, but it eventually found her anyway. She drove across the court, looking for a seam or a way to pass inside, but without one to be found, she looked toward Peck, standing behind the 3-point line. Peck swished the shot as time expired and might have been the most pleasantly stunned person in the building.

"I was so shocked," she said, with a big smile on her face.

Findley said she has confidence in Peck to take, and make, big shots and that she was a primary option on the game-winning play.

"We wanted to run a back-door play that we have," Findley said. "It would have been Tyra or Kendra on the back-cut to get the layup, instead of going for a three. … They were denying Maddie so hard but she still ended up getting the ball and was able to get it to that side of the floor. The back-cut wasn't open but Tyra was open and she hit Tyra and she hit the shot."

Freshman Brooklin Bain had 14 points and seven rebounds for OC while Blackburn had 11 points before exiting in the third quarter due to injury. Madeline Stephens had a double-double for Angelo State with 13 points and 11 rebounds and the Rambelles' only senior, Lana Marov, almost had one with nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Eagles will host St. Mary's (Texas) on Friday and Saturday for their final regular-season games and need to keep the positive momentum rolling.

"They are a very capable team and they're always well-coached," Findley said of the Rattlers. "They run good stuff. They run it well and they always play good defense. We will have to be ready."
