OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 26, 2021) – Basketball can be both exhilarating and heartbreaking, as Oklahoma Christian has learned this week.
The Lady Eagles celebrated a buzzer-beating win on Monday against Angelo State (Texas), but on Friday, the buzzer only brought them agony, as Hannah Wilson of St. Mary's (Texas) hit a baseline jumper as time expired to lift the Rattlers to a 71-70 win in the Eagles' Nest.
It was a tough way to end a game that OC (6-7, 6-6 Lone Star Conference) led for more than 28 minutes, by as many as 12 points. Senior guard
Maddison Collyer Ingraham just missed being the hero, as she scored a career-high 25 points to go with seven assists and four rebounds and made two clutch free throws with 2.1 seconds left to give the Lady Eagles a 70-69 lead.
As good as Ingraham was for OC, the 6-foot-3 Wilson was for St. Mary's (6-7, 6-7), as the senior finished with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds in only 27 minutes of action. Tonia Bilic (17 points, eight rebounds) also provided a major boost for the Rattlers, who outrebounded OC 43-32, including 25-11 in the second half.
OC had a balanced attack, with freshman
Brooklin Bain scoring 15 points (all in the second half) and grabbing 11 rebounds (all but one in the first half) for her sixth career double-double. Junior
Kendra Levings scored 13 points while senior
Tyra Peck added 12 points and five assists.
The Lady Eagles led 35-24 at halftime. St. Mary's pulled within 40-39 before Wilson picked up her fourth foul and while she was on the bench, OC again extended its lead. Two free throws by Levings with 15 seconds left in the third quarter put the Lady Eagles up 55-43 and they led 58-46 with 9:28 left after a 3-pointer by Bain.
Wilson scored seven straight points ahead of a 3-pointer by Bilic that brought the Rattlers within 58-56 and they tied the game at 58-58 with 6 minutes left on a basket by Natalia Ryng.
Baskets by Ingraham and Bain put OC back ahead but the Lady Eagles weren't able to pull away. A driving layup by Bilic with 15.4 seconds left gave the Rattlers their first lead of the half at 69-68. After an OC turnover, Ryng missed two free throws for St. Mary's, giving the Lady Eagles another chance with 6.4 seconds left.
Levings inbounded to Ingraham, who drove toward the basket and was fouled by Briley Perkins with 2.1 seconds left.
After Ingraham made both free throws, the Rattlers called timeout and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. Bain tipped an inbounds lob by Ryng out of bounds with seven-tenths of a second showing on the clock, but Ryng's subsequent lob to Wilson was true.
The teams will play again at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the regular-season finale, with both harboring hopes of making the eight-team Lone Star Conference tournament.
