Rodery’s gem gives Eagles split of doubleheader at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas (Feb. 26, 2021) – Gabe Rodery pitched pristinely, throwing a four-hit shutout, lifting Oklahoma Christian to a 3-0 win over Texas A&M International on Friday at Jorge Haynes Field.

TAMIU rallied to win 3-0 in the second game of the doubleheader, meaning the 1 p.m. game on Saturday will be for the series win between OC (2-3, 2-3 Lone Star Conference) and the Dustdevils (3-7, 3-7).

Rodery (2-0), a senior left-hander from Verdigris, Okla., put together one of his finest performances as an Eagle, and that's saying something, as he was an All-South Central Region selection in 2019. In his longest career outing, he allowed only one extra-base hit – a ninth-inning double – and only one TAMIU baserunner advanced as far as third base.

He struck out three batters and walked only one while recording his fifth (and longest) complete-game shutout.

Kevin Collyar opened the game with a single off TAMIU starter Abanny Garcia (0-1) and later scored on a single by Michael DiFiore to give the Eagles an early lead. In the fifth, Blake Empkey slammed a towering solo home run over the centerfield fence to make it 2-0. Cole Lee's sixth-inning single scored Coleton Hinkle to extend OC's lead to 3-0.

In the second game, TAMIU starter Bryce Faust (1-1) blanked the Eagles for eight innings, with Hugo Mendiola pitching a scoreless ninth for the save. OC had eight hits and left nine runners on base, three of those in the fourth inning. DiFiore and Edwards each had two hits for OC.

OC starter Ty Dudley (0-1) allowed six hits and three runs in five innings and took the pitching loss.
