OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 2, 2021) -- Sheridan Bostic's 3-pointer with 6.6 seconds left provided the margin of victory for Midwestern State (Texas) as the Mustangs downed Oklahoma Christian 71-68 on Thursday night in a back-and-forth nonconference basketball game inside the Eagles' Nest.
Kendall Blackburn missed a well-guarded and difficult 3-point attempt at the buzzer for OC (0-4). The Lady Eagles trailed by seven points with just 1:49 left before rallying to twice tie the game, the latter time with 12.9 seconds on a basket by
Brooklin Bain. She had 18 points and 17 rebounds, the latter matching her career high and the highest total by any Lone Star Conference player this season.
After a timeout, Midwestern State (4-2) got the basketball to Morgan Lenahan, who led all scorers with 28 points and added nine rebounds. When OC's defense collapsed on Lenahan, she passed to Bostic, who knocked down her shot from the right corner after hitting one of her previous seven shots from behind the arc.
"They hit the last shot," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "We had a chance but couldn't get an open look. … That kind of stuff will come and hopefully confidence will come as we do it more. We've had to do it already a lot (this season) in games."
The game featured 14 lead changes and neither team led by more than nine points. The Lady Eagles were up 28-22 in the second quarter before Midwestern State rallied for a 36-33 halftime lead. The Mustangs stretched their lead to 44-35 on a 3-pointer by Lenahan with 6:08 left in the third quarter, but OC then went on a 13-2 run to go up 48-46 on a basket by
Emma Epperly in the final minute of the quarter.
OC was up 54-48 with 9:12 left after a layup by Bain and the Lady Eagles' final lead came at 58-57 with 5:16 left, also on a basket by Bain. OC scored only one point over the next 3½ minutes as the Mustangs built their seven-point lead. A three-point play by
Kate Bradley, a basket by
Lexy Borgstadt and another bucket by Bain tied the game at 66-66 with 39 seconds left.
After Frances King (18 points, nine turnovers) scored for Midwestern State with 28.3 seconds left, Bain scored again to tie the game at 68-68.
"I felt better about the way we played overall," Findley said. "Our defense was better. We were rebounding pretty good. We let them outrebound us in the second half, which cost us. We still had too many turnovers (20). We've got to get the turnovers down. Our ballhanders are not experienced ballhandlers yet, but they're getting there."
Bradley and Borgstadt, each a freshman, scored 13 points each for OC. The Lady Eagles shot 40.3 percent (27 of 67) from the field but just 15.4 percent (2 of 13) from 3-point range. Midwestern State hit 8 of 25 3-point attempts (32 percent) and 35.8 percent from the field (24 of 67).
OC will play another mandated nonconference game against a LSC opponent on Saturday when the Lady Eagles will host Texas Woman's for a 2 p.m. game.
