OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 3, 2021) – Senior Night at Oklahoma Christian might not have ended in a win, as West Texas A&M edged OC 2-1 on a chilly, damp Wednesday at the Eagle Soccer Field, but it represented another positive step for the Eagles this season.
OC (4-7-4, 4-4-4 Lone Star Conference) played its final home game of OC coach
Evan Dresel's inaugural season against West Texas A&M (12-5, 8-4).
The Eagles held the Lady Buffs scoreless through 62 minutes of action — an impressive feat since West Texas A&M came into the match with 54 goals through 17 matches.
Brooklyn Fink, Jordan Freindenbloom,
Reagan Keiser and
Katie McCullock anchored the defensive stand for the Eagles and found a way to thwart every attack of the Buffs throughout the first half.
After controlling much of the offensive possession throughout the first half and the start to the second, the Buffs finally broke the scoreless drought in the 63rd minute of action. Hannah Kelley-Lusk broke free and dribbled down the field, split the Eagles defense and placed the ball in the corner of the net for her 22nd goal of the season.
The Eagles tried to push through on the offensive attack, but were unable to find an equalizer. Their best chance for a goal came in the 14th minute, when a shot from distance by
Thalia Delgado appeared bound for the net, only to have West Texas A&M defender Mia Mendoza clear it off the goal line.
Despite the 1-0 loss, the final score represents the closest match between the Eagles and the Buffs in their five meetings. West Texas A&M had won the previous four matches by three goals or more.
Caprice King lead the charge for the Eagles on the offensive end with two shots, one of those on frame.
OC goalkeeper
Gabby Goddard finished with four saves in the match, while West Texas A&M goalkeeper Daniela Estrada had one save. West Texas A&M outshot OC 13-8.
The Eagles honored four seniors after the match --
Marcela Dantas, Delgado,
Naomi Reagan and
Catharina Ribeiro.
With their postseason hopes still alive, OC will travel to Texas A&M-Commerce for the regular-season finale on Saturday. To qualify for the seven-team LSC tournament, the Eagles need to beat TAMUC and hope a match the same day between St. Mary's (Texas) and Lubbock Christian (Texas) ends in a draw.
