4th overtime match of 2021 ends in tie for Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 6, 2021) – It's becoming quite the defensive streak for Oklahoma Christian's women's soccer team -- 225 minutes and 10 seconds, or three hours and 45 minutes (and 10 seconds).

That's the total clock time in which the Eagles have not allowed a goal to be scored, with the latest 110 minutes happening Wednesday night at the Eagle Soccer Field against Midwestern State (Texas) in a 0-0 draw.

OC (1-4-3, 1-1-3 Lone Star Conference) has not conceded a goal since a week ago, Sept. 29 in the 85th minute against Texas Woman's. Following that came a scoreless draw against defending conference champion Angelo State (Texas), then Wednesday's result. With six standings points, OC now is in a four-way tie for eighth place in the 14-team LSC. The top seven teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the conference's postseason tournament.

Midwestern State (5-2-2, 2-0-2) entered the game on a two-game win streak, wth its last win in overtime over St. Mary's (Texas). Wednesday's game was the fourth overtime game of the season for both OC and the Mustangs. For OC, that's only one shy of the school record of five, set in 2005. This season, the Eagles are unbeaten in overtime, going 1-0-3.

The last time OC posted consecutive shutouts was in 2016, when the Eagles beat Rogers State 3-0 on Sept. 29 and then tied Newman (Kan.) 0-0 on Oct. 1. The last time OC had consecutive scoreless draws came in 2003, on Oct. 1 against USAO and Oct. 3 against Southern Nazarene.

Midwestern State controlled the majority of possession throughout the 110 minutes of action Wednesday and outshot OC 21-15. Nevertheless, the Eagles hit four shots on target, but could not find the back of the net.

Early in the match, in the seventh minute, senior Thalia Delgado broke away with the ball and hit the ball to the corner of the goal, but Midwestern State goalkeeper senior Taylor Camp saved it. Two inches to the left or right could have been the lead for the Eagles, which ended up being the story for the rest of the match.

The seconds ticked off the clock in the second half and freshman Kyla Lovelace struck the ball towards Camp. Freshman Gracie Cornelius made her run into the center of the box, just as Camp punched the ball out. Cornelius ran into the ball, but Camp saved it, one of four saves on the night for her.

The final clear opportunity for the Eagles to get a walkoff win happened in the 107th minute, during the final overtime period. Sophomore Ellise Foreman shot the ball from about 25 yards out and it sailed directly into the crossbar, mere inches separating the Eagles from a win.

The Eagles' defense again played another impressive game, with a back line anchored by freshman Katie McCullock and sophomores Morgan Berres, Brooklyn Fink and Jordan Freidenbloom. The defensive pressure shined across the entire field and all positions.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Goddard recorded eight saves, most of them jumping grabs and perfectly timed snags. She recorded her fifth career shutout and her third of the season.

The Eagles will go on the road for their next match, on Saturday against St. Edward's (Texas) at 4 p.m.
