Lovelace scores 2 in loss to St. Edward's

AUSTIN, Texas (Oct. 9, 2021) – After back-to-back scoreless women's soccer matches, Oklahoma Christian came alive on the offensive end twice on Saturday afternoon at St. Edward's (Texas), taking the lead before eventually falling 3-2 at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

OC (1-5-3, 1-2-3 Lone Star Conference) struck first against St. Edward's (6-2-2, 4-0-1) after a scoreless first half. In the 54th minute, freshman Kyla Lovelace found the back of the net past the hands of St. Edward's goalkeeper freshman Abby Carlson, who made one save.

The Eagles maintained control of the match until the 72nd minute, when St. Edward's snapped OC's streak of 296 minutes and 53 seconds without conceding a goal. Sophomore Katie Gay scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from senior Sarah Preston.

Staring down what would be their fifth overtime match of the 2021 season with 15 minutes left in regulation and the score knotted at 1-1, the Hilltoppers (who outshot OC 14-6) scored two goals in 18 seconds to take a 3-1 lead. The goals by sophomore Ari Ramirez and freshman Alyssa Garcia were their first of the season.

Nevertheless, OC responded to the deficit with an offensive punch of their own in the 87th minute. After a foul on St. Edward's, Lovelace rocketed the ball into the net, off an assist from senior Marcela Dantas, for her third collegiate goal.

With only three minutes remaining on the clock, the Eagles continued to press, trying to tie the match, but could not break through. Even so, OC scored two goals against the Hilltoppers for only the second time in the 16-game series between the programs, and for the first time since 1995.

OC sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Goddard finished with four saves.

The Eagles will continue LSC action on the road when they travel to Portales, N.M. to face Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday.
