ODESSA, Texas (Oct. 30, 2021) – The treat came early for Oklahoma Christian on Halloween weekend.
OC (4-6-4, 4-3-4 Lone Star Conference) earned a huge 3-1 win against Texas-Permian Basin (2-15, 1-11) on the road Saturday afternoon at the UTPB Soccer Field.
The Eagles found themselves down early in the match after Olivia Rees bent a corner kick by the Falcons into the back of the net in the second minute of action. Rees, who recorded her second goal of the season, would be the only goalscorer of the match for the Falcons, and the Eagles soon broke their drought and lit a flaming scoring match in the first half.
Freshman
Kyla Lovelace found the back of the net twice. Her first goal came in the 23rd minute off a volley shot to the left corner of the net. She added a second goal in the 44th minute on a penalty kick, marking her sixth goal of the season. A true freshman from Mustang, Okla., Lovelace scored two in a match for the second time this season, with her first brace coming in a 3-2 loss at St. Edward's (Texas) on Oct. 9.
Junior
Ana Carolina Ferreira added to the scoring sheet for Oklahoma Christian in the 34th minute. Ferreira controlled the ball in the box after it was deflected and placed it in the right corner, past the outstretched hands of the Falcons' goalkeeper, junior Jenna McEnaney. Today's goal marked Ferreira's first goal in her two seasons at OC.
All three OC goals happened in the first half. For the remainder of the match, the Eagles' defense only allowed three shots in the second half. Despite taking 11 shots in the second half, the Eagles were unable to increase their lead. OC posted a 23-8 edge in shots for the game. McEnaney made 11 saves while OC goalkeeper
Gabby Goddard had four.
The three goals scored by OC on Saturday stand as the most goals scored by the Eagles in a match during in the 2021 season and the most since Oct. 3, 2017, when the Eagles scored three in a loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State.
With the win, the Eagles have 16 standings points to move into eighth in Lone Star Conference standings. Currently, they sit one point behind seventh-place St. Mary's (Texas). The top seven teams will advance to the Lone Star Conference tournament.
"The team was awesome again today," OC coach
Evan Dresel said. "It was a great team effort to come back after going down early. A lot of players saw minutes in the match and everyone pulled their weight. Overall, today's result was a great team win."
OC will return home to host West Texas A&M at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday on Senior Day. Four seniors --
Naomi Reagan,
Thalia Delgado,
Marcela Dantas and
