OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 2, 2021) – One day and one game at a time continues to be a powerful mantra for Oklahoma Christian, which earned a 0-0 draw with reigning Lone Star Conference women's soccer champion Angelo State (Texas) on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (1-4-2, 1-1-2 LSC) stepped onto Eagle Soccer Field with nothing to lose in their match against Angelo State (7-1-1, 2-1-1), a squad currently receiving votes in the NCAA Division II coaches' poll. Over 110 minutes of play, a viewer of the game wouldn't have been able to guess which team won a conference championship in the last year. Possession was split almost evenly between the Eagles and Rambelles, with ASU controlling 51 percent and OC maintaining 49 percent.
The Rambelles pushed the pace of the game in the first half, utilizing their speed to fly forward and attack the goal. After halftime, the Eagles appeared to be the better team, possessing the ball well through the midfield and getting a few solid looks at the goal, shooting 50 percent more shots in the second half than in the first. Angelo State outshot OC for the game 19-7.
After the whistle blew at the end of 90 minutes, OC entered overtime play for the third time this season and soon improved to 1-0-2 this season in extra time.
Piecing together the second shutout of the season, the Eagles' defense proved to be the shining point. OC's back line, which includes sophomores
Jordan Freidenbloom,
Brooklyn Fink and
Morgan Berres and freshman
Katie McCullock, anchored the defense and helped pull the Rambelles offside seven times.
The 0-0 result added another stellar line to OC sophomore goalkeeper
Gabby Goddard's resume. She recorded 13 saves, several of them being diving grabs and punchouts to keep Angelo State from winning the match. Her 13 saves were her most this season and her second-most as a collegiate player.
The shutout was Goddard's fourth of her career and her second of the season. The other came last month in a 0-0 draw at Lubbock Christian (Texas).
On the offensive side, the Eagles saw the best look of the day from sophomore
Carson Hazel in the 46th minute, as she struck the ball towards the right corner of the net, but Angelo State goalkeeper senior Kira Miller saved it, which was her only save of the game.
Senior
Thalia Delgado used her speed to challenge Miller at the net twice but was unable to get one through. Sophomore
Ellise Foreman and freshmen
Reagan Keiser and
Kyla Lovelace all contributed to OC's attacking push with shots.
The tie, which gives the Eagles one point in the conference standings, represents the first result for OC against Angelo State in five meetings, the first one coming in 1998.
The Eagles will play their next match at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against LSC opponent Midwestern State (Texas).
