SAN ANGELO, Texas (Jan. 20, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian's small band of Lady Eagles are earning quite the reputation as road warriors this basketball season.
On Wednesday, OC won its third road game in four tries during this COVID-19-interrupted campaign, seizing control early in the second quarter and hanging on for a 56-47 win over Angelo State (Texas) at the Junell Center.
Freshman forward
Brooklin Bain had her second career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as OC (3-2, 3-2 Lone Star Conference) downed the Rambelles, who were picked fourth in the preseason LSC poll. Impressively, it was only arguably the Lady Eagles' best win of the season, as OC also won in December at Texas A&M International, which is off to an 8-1 start and receiving votes in national polls this week. OC also owns a win at Cameron.
With a limited roster – only eight players were available on Wednesday – OC is succeeding by slowing the game down, playing solid zone defense, scoring baskets at critical junctures and taking advantage of its opponents' mistakes. Angelo State (0-3, 0-3) committed 24 turnovers (leading to 24 OC points) and OC outrebounded the Rambelles 47-37.
Angelo State led 14-11 after the first quarter but then went scoreless for more than six minutes, allowing OC to pull ahead 18-14. The Lady Eagles took the lead for good on a basket by
Emma Epperly with 7:38 left in the first half and stretched their advantage to 26-18 by halftime as the Rambelles managed only four points in the quarter.
The Rambelles edged closer and pulled within 34-32 on a 3-pointer by Sawyer Lloyd with 2:04 left in the third quarter but didn't score again for 5½ minutes, allowing OC to go on what proved to be a decisive 14-0 run. A basket by
Amaya Buchanan with 6:58 left put OC ahead 48-32.
The Lady Eagles managed only one basket the rest of the way – a 3-pointer with 4:15 left by
Kendra Levings, who scored 14 points – and Angelo State made one final push. A basket by Madeline Stephens (who had 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots) brought the Rambelles within 51-47 with 1:30 left.
But the rally ended there, as Angelo State failed to score over the final 90 seconds, while
Maddison Collyer Ingraham and
Tyra Peck combined to go 5 of 8 from the free-throw line to seal the win for OC.
Ingraham finished with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists for OC. Lana Marov added 10 points for Angelo State, which lost for the first time in four all-time meetings with OC.
OC's next two scheduled games also will be on the road – at Texas Woman's on Jan. 26 and at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Jan. 28. The Lady Eagles' next home game will be against UAFS on Jan. 30.
