EDMOND, Okla. (Aug. 21, 2020) – It proved to be a treacherous final nine holes for Trevor Norby on Friday, but the Oklahoma Christian senior golfer hung on and accomplished his goal – making the cut in the Oklahoma Open for the second straight year.

Norby posted a 3-over-par 73 on Oak Tree Country Club's East Course and ended the day at 2-under 138 for the tournament, good enough to be among the top 40 players and ties who advanced to Saturday's final round.

He did relinquish his status as the event's top amateur, though, as former Missouri Southern standout Jamie Voegeli fired a sizzling 64 and now is at 5-under through 36 holes. Besides Voegeli and Norby, only two other amateurs made the cut – Texas-Arlington senior Kyle Cox at 2-under and Central Oklahoma player Jacob Lackey at 1-under (on the number).

Norby, a two-time NCAA Division II All-American from Carlsbad, Calif., started his round on No. 10 and made the turn at 5-under, offsetting a bogey on the par-4 No. 15 with a birdie on the par-4 No. 16. A bogey at the par-4 No. 2 put him at 4-under, where he stayed until another bogey on No. 7 and yet another on No. 9, both par-4 holes.

He finished the round in a tie for 32nd in the 156-man field. In last year's Open, also played at Oak Tree East, he finished tied for 22nd (second among amateurs). On Saturday, he'll tee off at 8:30 a.m., grouped with former Southern Illinois player Peyton Wilhoit of North Little Rock, Ark., and Britt Pavelonis of Harrisburg, Ill.

The news wasn't as good for 10 other current or former OC players who played in the tournament, who missed the cut.

Two of them did so by the narrowest of margins. Current OC junior Alex Motes of Sulphur Springs, Texas – who like Norby posted a first-round 65 – shot a 75 on the 7,126-yard course and finished at even-par 140. So did Preston Wilkins of Tulsa, a four-time NAIA All-American (2009 to 2012) for the Eagles, who had five birdies but bogeyed his final hole, the par-4 No. 9, en route to a 2-under 68.

Another four-time OC All-American and the 2010 Oklahoma Open champion, current PGA Tour pro Rhein Gibson, had four bogeys in a six-hole stretch and posted a 73, leaving him at 1-over 141. Former OC player Corey Hale, who spent 2019 on the China Tour, ended the tournament at 2-over 142 after also shooting a second-round 73.

Current OC junior Alejandro Armijo of Rio Rancho, N.M., fired a 72 and finished at 143.

Others with OC ties in the tournament included former player Taylor Williams of Chickasha (who shot a 76 and finished at 7-over), former player Ethan Smith (71, 8-over), current freshman Ransen Turner of Edmond (74, 9-over), current freshman Said Powers of Edmond (80, 13-over) and former player Kyle Hudelson of Edmond, who shot a 74 but ended up being disqualified. Hudelson has won the Oklahoma Golf Association's last two Mid-Amateur Championships.
