TYLER, Texas (July 29, 2020) –
Alex Motes improved upon his first-round score in the 50th Texas State Open, but it wasn't quite enough for the Oklahoma Christian golfer to make the cut after the second round on Wednesday.
Playing an afternoon round, Motes, from Sulphur Springs, Texas, posted a steady 1-over-par 71 at The Cascades Club that included 13 pars and two birdies. That put him at 4-over-par 144 for the tournament. The cut to the top 55 players and ties in the 156-man tournament was 1-under.
Motes, who just finished his first season at OC after two seasons at Midland (Texas) – where he earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-America honors – earned his spot in the Texas State Open with a second-place finish in a June 17 qualifying event at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, Texas. He was one of 32 amateurs to qualify for the tournament.
Earlier this summer, he tied for 12th in the Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at The Territory Golf and Country Club in Duncan, Okla.
