LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 20, 2020) – Things seemed to be going well for Oklahoma Christian at Cameron on Thursday, with the Lady Eagles up at halftime in a Lone Star Conference divisional basketball game and playing solid defense
But Cameron scored the first 11 points of the second half and never looked back, pulling away for a 79-58 win at Aggie Gym. Essentially, it was two players who did the damage for Cameron – the LSC's leading scorer, Maighan Hedge, who poured in 27 points, and reserve guard Amaka Nwakamma, who had 22 points.
With the loss, OC (7-16, 7-12 LSC) dropped into 12th place in the 18-team league standings, right on the cut line to qualify for the league's postseason tournament. OC has a one-game lead (and a tiebreaker) over Texas A&M International and Texas Woman's and a one-game lead (but not the tiebreaker) over Texas-Permian Basin with three regular-season games remaining.
Cameron (12-13, 11-8) is bidding for a first-round home postseason game and the Aggies controlled the boards, outrebounding OC 53-37. The Aggies scored 36 points in the paint and had 15 second-chance points, compared to 20 and seven for OC.
OC senior guard
Megan Shelton scored all of her team-high 13 points in the first half and it was her put-back basket in the final moments that gave OC a 30-29 lead, after the Lady Eagles had led by as many as seven points in the first quarter.
Hedge scored six points in Cameron's 11-0 run to open the second half and after OC closed the gap to 42-34, Nwakamma scored nine straight points to blow the game open. Her basket with 2:34 left in the third quarter put the Aggies ahead 51-34. OC went just 3 of 16 from the field in the quarter.
OC came no closer than 15 points in the fourth quarter. Shelton was the only OC player to score in double figures, but
Kendall Blackburn scored nine points and
Katie Mayo added eight to go with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. The four blocks gave Mayo, a junior from Newcastle, 118 in her career, moving her past OC Athletic Hall of Famer Sarah Reese (114 from 1999-2002) for sole possession of third place on OC's career list.
"I thought we played an excellent defensive first half and then it all fell apart in the second half, because we couldn't get the defensive rebounds and we put them on the line too much," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "We've got to be more physical on the boards."
OC will visit Midwestern State (Texas) on Saturday afternoon. Midwestern State is in 11th in the LSC with an 8-11 league record. OC beat the Mustangs earlier this season in Oklahoma City.
