WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Feb. 22, 2020) – An outstanding third quarter for Oklahoma Christian put the Lady Eagles in good position to close out a road win Saturday afternoon, but Midwestern State (Texas) turned the tables on OC in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs outscored OC 25-12 in the quarter, including 16-6 over the final six minutes, to down the Lady Eagles 71-61 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. OC lost despite a stellar performance by junior forward
Katie Mayo, who had season highs in points (27) and rebounds (16, matching her career high) along with three blocked shots. She hit 5 of 9 shots from 3-point range.
With two basketball games remaining, OC (7-17, 7-13 Lone Star Conference) is now in a four-way tie for 12th place in the league standings with Texas Woman's, Texas-Permian Basin and Texas A&M International, all of which won Saturday.
The top 12 teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the LSC postseason tournament. OC holds the tiebreaker with Texas Woman's and TAMIU, but not with UTPB. Midwestern State (11-13, 9-11) is tied with Arkansas-Fort Smith for 10th place and likely clinched a spot in the LSC tournament.
OC trailed 33-22 at halftime and by 15 points two minutes into the third quarter, but went on a 25-7 run over the rest of the quarter and took a 49-46 lead on a 3-pointer by Mayo in the final minute.
A 3-pointer by
Megan Shelton with 7:08 left gave OC its final lead at 53-52 and a basket by Mayo at the 6:18 mark tied the game at 55-55.
Markayla Johnson scored for Midwestern State to break the tie with 5:54 left and after a pair of OC misses, Elizabeth Cathcart's layup gave the Mustangs a four-point lead with 5:30 left. OC came no closer than two points the rest of the way. The Lady Eagles went scoreless for more than three minutes before a 3-pointer by Mayo pulled them within 70-61 with 34 seconds left.
Midwestern State hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final 2:21 to keep OC at bay. Frances King scored 23 points, hitting 5 of 9 3-point attempts, to lead the Mustangs, while Mica Schneider added a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
Mayo's double-double was the fifth of the season. She moved past Katy Clift (who had 1,025 points from 2008-2012) into 30th place on OC's all-time scoring list, increasing her total to 1,042 points. Shelton and
Maddison Collyer each scored nine points for OC, with Collyer adding seven assists.
OC will play its two final regular-season games at home, hosting No. 3-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday and Texas-Tyler on Saturday.
