No. 4 TAMUC stays undefeated against Lady Eagles

COMMERCE, Texas (Jan. 18, 2020) – Oklahoma Christian made Texas A&M-Commerce work in the second half, but TAMUC eventually pulled away for a 91-64 win over the Lady Eagles on Saturday afternoon in TAMUC's Field House.

TAMUC (17-0, 11-0 Lone Star Conference) is one of only three remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division II and entered the game ranked No. 4 in the Division II Sports Information Directors Association poll and No. 6 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

The Lions built a 59-31 lead with 7:02 left in the third quarter, but OC (5-10, 5-6) went on a 21-5 run and pulled within 64-52 with 9:05 left in the game on a baseline jumper by Carolyne Lawley. TAMUC answered with 17 straight points to put the game away.

TAMUC outrebounded the Lady Eagles 54-32 and hit 28 of its 31 free throws (90.3 percent), compared to 10 of 14 71.4 percent) for OC. The Lions also made 11 of 23 3-point attempts (47.8 percent) to keep OC from coming too close.

Only two OC players scored in double figures – point guard Maddison Collyer, who had 15 points, and center Kendall Blackburn, who had 11 points. Five Lions scored in double figures, led by Dyani Robinson with 17 points.

"Once again, getting outrebounded proved costly," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "We've been improving in that area, but Commerce was just too long and physical. I was pleased with our ball-handling versus their pressure for the most part and that's another area we have been working on to improve. We put them on the free-throw line and gave up too many threes. So add that to our list of things to work on."

Chania Wright and Robinson each hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter to stake TAMUC to a 29-12 lead. A 7-0 run by OC cut the Lions' lead to 31-21 with 5:55 left in the second quarter before the Lions scored the next nine points. TAMUC led 48-27 at halftime.

During the Lady Eagles' big second-half run, Megan Shelton scored all eight of her points while Blackburn scored seven.

Katie Mayo finished with four points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots for OC. Mykiel Burleson scored 14 points for the Lions, while Alexis Bryant had 12 points and seven rebounds, Alexus Jones had 11 points and seven rebounds and Maddison Glass had 10 points. DesiRay Kernel had eight points and 12 rebounds for TAMUC.

OC will return home for a pair of games next week, hosting LSC divisional rivals Midwestern State (Texas) on Thursday and Cameron on Saturday.
