OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 23, 2020) – Oklahoma Christian basketball coach
Stephanie Findley often has said that when her team's shots are falling, everyone looks smart, and the Lady Eagles thus were geniuses on Thursday against Midwestern State (Texas).
Five OC players scored in double figures, another posted double-figure rebounds and the Lady Eagles posted a lot of offensive season highs while beating Midwestern State 89-73 in the Eagles' Nest.
OC posted season-best marks for field-goal percentage (31 of 55, 56.4 percent), 3-pointers (11) and 3-point percentage (11 of 17, 64.7 percent). The latter was also the best by any Lone Star Conference team this season.
Reaching double figures in points for the Lady Eagles were
Kendall Blackburn (who went 8 of 9 from the field) and
Megan Shelton, who each scored 16 points;
Kendra Levings, who hit 4 of 5 3-point attempts en route to 13 points;
Tyra Peck, who went 3 of 4 from 3-point range and scored 13 points; and
Maddison Collyer, who hit both of her 3-point attempts and had six assists to go with her 12 points.
Forward
Katie Mayo just missed a double-double with nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists, helping the Lady Eagles post a 36-31 rebounding advantage. OC (6-10, 6-6 LSC) recorded assists of 25 of 31 baskets while picking up the win over LSC divisional rival Midwestern State (7-8, 5-6). The Lady Eagles have won three of their last four games to move up in the league standings.
"We need to win them at home, especially division games," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "The girls came out shooting really well and kept it up the whole game, which is what I've been looking for. … Today they strung four quarters together and shot the ball really well."
OC trailed only in the early minutes of the game and the Lady Eagles used a 6-0 spurt in the first quarter, highlighted by two layups by Shelton, to go ahead 16-10. It was 20-13 at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Eagles pushed their lead to 34-22 midway through the second quarter on two free throws by
Carolyne Lawley, but the Mustangs rallied within 38-35 at the 1:47 mark on a 3-pointer by Mica Schneider, who scored 13 points, and trailed only 42-37 at halftime.
The Lady Eagles hit 6 of 8 3-point attempts in the third quarter, including two each by Shelton and Collyer, and led 66-54 at the end. Levings and Peck each hit a 3-pointer in the first minute of the fourth quarter, the latter making it 72-56, and another 3-pointer by Peck with 5:52 left put OC up 77-59. The Mustangs came no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
"I thought we did a good job of jumping on them and keeping the pedal to the metal in the second half and not letting them get back in it," Findley said.
Elizabeth Cathcart – the reigning LSC offensive player of the week – led Midwestern State with 20 points, while Haevyn Risley added 13 points, six rebounds, six steals and six assists. The Mustangs are 0-4 against OC in Oklahoma, losing three times in the Eagles' Nest and once at Southern Nazarene's old Broadhurst Gymnasium.
OC will face another divisional foe, Cameron, on Saturday at 2 p.m.
