Northwestern takes season opener from OC women

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 5, 2019) – Northwestern Oklahoma State converted a first-half penalty kick and added two late goals to down Oklahoma Christian 3-0 on Thursday in the season opener for both women's teams at the Eagle Soccer Field.

Alissa Carlson scored twice for Northwestern, which outshot OC 16-11. The Rangers limited OC to just a handful of good scoring chances, with Northwestern goalkeeper Reyna Gonzalez making three saves. Meanwhile, her OC counterpart, freshman Gabby Goddard, made seven saves in her collegiate debut.

Carlson converted the penalty kick in the 26th minute after an OC foul in the penalty box. In the 77th minute, Whitney Blanchard scored on a cross from Alyssa Nunez to make it 2-0, and in the 85th minute, Carlson banged in a shot off the right post – off an assist from Yazmin Gomez – for an insurance goal for the Rangers.

Oby Okeke and Corina Marin each had two shots for the Eagles, who held a slight 51 percent-to-49 percent advantage in possession.

OC will return to action Saturday, hosting another Great American Conference foe, Southwestern Oklahoma State, at 5 p.m.
