OKLAHOMA CITY (July 8, 2019) – Two golfers with Oklahoma Christian connections finished in the top three on Monday at Lincoln Park Golf Club's West Course in the qualifier for the Oklahoma Golf Association's State Amateur Championship later this month.
Jordan Cook of Edmond, who played for the Eagles from 2007 to 2010, tied for the best round of the day, a 6-under-par 65, with Andrew Goodman of Norman. One shot behind them was a group of four players that included incoming OC golfer
Alex Motes, who posted a 66.
Cook played a bogey-free round that included birdies on four of the final six holes on the 6,576-yard layout at Lincoln Park West. Motes also had a bogey-free performance, recording five birdies, including a run of three straight on the par-5 No. 13, the par-4 No. 14 and the par-3 No. 15.
Motes, from Sulphur Springs, Texas, transferred to OC after playing two seasons at Midland (Texas) College. He earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-America first-team honors as a freshman, then posted three top-10 finishes and a stroke average of 75.17 as a sophomore. He signed with OC last November.
The qualifier was one of two being held this week for entry into the OGA's State Amateur Championship. The other will be held Thursday at Bailey Ranch Golf Club in Owasso.
Another former OC player, Kyle Hudelson, also qualified for the State Amateur, shooting an even-par 71 to make the cut on the number. He survived a 14-man playoff for 11 qualifying spots. Hudelson, from Edmond, played for the Eagles in 2008 and again in 2012. He has enjoyed a successful amateur career, highlighted by his run to the title match in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship two years ago in Pinehurst, N.C.
Two other OC players did not make the cut – incoming freshman
Hunter Oden of Piedmont (who shot a 75) and redshirt freshman
Ransen Turner (who shot a 78).
The 44 qualifiers from Monday, plus the 19 from Thursday, will join be in the 64-man field for the State Amateur, to be played at Oak Tree National in Edmond from July 22-24.
