Eagles look to extend championship golf season in Utah

Juan Pallach and the Eagles will begin play Thursday in the South Central-West Super Regional.

ST. GEORGE, Utah (May 8, 2019) – Oklahoma Christian's 2018-19 men's golf season has been one to remember, with five team titles, individual and team Heartland Conference championships and awards galore. But the Eagles have yet to achieve their ultimate goal for the season.

That's to play in the NCAA Division II Championship for the second time in program history, but to get there, they must finish high in the Division II South Central-West Super Regional, which will begin a three-day run Thursday at The Ledges Golf Club, a par-72, 7,145-yard course surrounded by desert landscape and the sandstone cliffs of Snow Canyon State Park in southern Utah.

The top four teams, plus the top two individuals not on one of those teams, will advance to the Division II tournament, set for May 20-24 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va. OC is among the favorites in the 20-team field to snag one of those spots, but coach David Lynn said his players understand they can take nothing for granted this week.

As a reminder, he can simply remind the Eagles about last season, when, after 54 holes of a Super Regional, they finished one agonizing shot shy of qualifying for a playoff for a spot at the national tournament.

Four of OC's five starters from last season – seniors Cameron Brown, Garrett White and Juan Pallach and sophomore Andres Brictson – are back this year. Last summer, Lynn picked up a key transfer from NCAA Division I San Diego State, Trevor Norby.

That starting quintet hasn't changed all season for the Eagles, mainly because there wasn't much reason to change. In addition to the five wins, the Eagles haven't finished lower than fifth in any event this season, with one of those fifth-place showings coming in the South Central-West Regional Preview at The Ledges in October. Because of travel schedules, the Eagles were forced to rush through the final round and probably left some strokes on the course as a result, Lynn said.

There won't be any such time issues this week, though. The Eagles' primary concern will be playing within themselves and focusing on what they do well, not on what other teams are doing.

There might not be a hotter player in Division II than Brictson, who won two of OC's last three tournaments, including the Heartland Conference Championship at Slick Rock Golf Course in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. He won that tournament in a playoff with Norby, who posted a second-round 8-under-par 64, matching the lowest round in relation to par in program history.

Norby also won an individual title this spring, the Broncho Invitational at Oak Tree Country Club's East Course in Edmond, Okla. White was the 2018 Heartland individual titlist. Pallach and Brown have a slew of top-10 career finishes between them and also are threats to go low.

OC finished as the Super Regional runner-up in 2016, its first season of postseason eligibility in Division II, and advanced to the national tournament. Pallach started for the Eagles that year.

Joining OC this year in the Super Regional from the South Central Region will be No. 2 seed St. Mary's (Texas), Colorado Mines, Western New Mexico, Dixie State (Utah), Midwestern State (Texas), Colorado Mesa, St. Edward's (Texas), Arkansas-Fort Smith and Lubbock Christian (Texas).

Representing the West Region will be top-seeded Chico State (Calif.), Western Washington, Sonoma State (Calif.), California State-East Bay, California State-Monterey Bay, Simon Fraser (British Columbia), Stanislaus State (Calif.), Concordia (Ore.), California-San Diego and Holy Names (Calif.).

Eight of the 20 teams in the Super Regional were ranked in the final regular-season Bushnell Golfweek Division II national poll – No. 4 Western Washington, No. 5 Chico State, No. 9 St. Mary's, OC, No. 13 Sonoma State, No. 19 Simon Fraser, No. 20 Cal State-Monterey Bay and No. 23 Midwestern State.

OC will tee off the first round from hole No. 1 at 1 p.m. Central time and will be grouped with St. Mary's and Chico State.
