Lady Eagles run into Lubbock Christian buzzsaw

LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 23, 2019) – It's not often Lubbock Christian (Texas) loses a women's basketball game, but it happened (albeit in controversial fashion) on Thursday when the Chaparrals played at Newman (Kan.).

The Chaparrals – seeking to re-establish themselves atop the South Central Region pecking order – took out their frustration on Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon, jumping to a 25-0 lead en route to a 93-44 win over the Lady Eagles at the Rip Griffin Center.

Lubbock Christian (22-5, 12-1 Heartland Conference) already has clinched the league title, while OC (12-13, 5-7) will have its conference finish determined next week, when the Lady Eagles will host Arkansas-Fort Smith on Thursday and Rogers State on Saturday to close the regular season. OC will enter the week in seventh place, but just one game out of third place.

In its antepenultimate game of the season against Lubbock Christian, OC missed its first 10 shots and committed three turnovers before Megan Shelton's three-point play with 3:13 left in the first quarter provided her team's first points. Lubbock Christian led 27-6 after one quarter and 52-14 at halftime.

The Lady Eagles' offense improved in the second half, but no one besides NCAA Division II scoring leader Addy Clift, who scored 23 points, reached double figures, as Shelton was the second-leading scorer with seven points. OC shot 27.3 percent from the field.

Olivia Robertson led four Chaparrals in double figures with 15 points. Lubbock Christian shot 52.5 percent from the field.
