Tough start results in loss for OC to UAFS

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 28, 2019) – A rough first half for Oklahoma Christian proved too much for the Lady Eagles to overcome on Thursday against visiting Arkansas-Fort Smith.

UAFS built a 25-point first half lead and held off a brief run by OC in the second half for an 85-73 win in the Eagles' Nest, giving the Lions a sweep of the regular-season series between the basketball teams.

OC (12-14, 5-8 Heartland Conference) will finish either sixth or seventh in the Heartland standings, depending on the result of its regular-season finale Saturday at home against Rogers State. UAFS (10-16, 7-6) had five players score in double figures, led by Ellie Lehne, who had 20 points and eight rebounds.

OC had four reach double figures, including Katie Mayo (16 points), Addy Clift (15 points) and Maddison Collyer (15 points), but the Lady Eagles struggled shooting, hitting just 37.7 percent from the field, including 25.9 percent in the first half. They also hit just 20 of 31 free throws (64.5 percent), while UAFS went 19 of 23 (82.6 percent) from the line.

The Lions led 23-11 after one quarter and took a 44-19 lead when Anna Bonham, who scored 15 points, hit a 3-pointer with 2:34 left in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by freshman Crystal Bell pulled OC within 48-28 by halftime.

The Lady Eagles chipped away in the second half, but the closest they came was at 79-66 after Collyer capped a 6-0 spurt with a layup midway through the fourth quarter.

Daijah Brown had 14 points while Tamera Gulley had 11 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots and Alexsis Brown scored 11 points for UAFS. Tyra Peck scored 11 points to go with a team-high six rebounds for OC and Hannah Bentsen scored eight points.
