OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 15, 2018) – In a chippy game mostly played in the rain, Rogers State downed Oklahoma Christian 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Eagle Soccer Field.
The teams battled mostly on even terms in the first half, although Rogers State (5-1, 2-0 Heartland Conference) led 1-0 after Melissa Cardenas converted a penalty kick that officials awarded after an OC foul in the penalty box in the 15th minute. Not long thereafter, rain began falling and continued throughout the rest of the game.
Rogers State's second goal came in strange fashion in the 48th minute. OC goalkeeper
Addison Milner, who had 10 saves, first stopped a point-blank shot by Maggie Brown, then appeared to do the same on a quick follow shot by Kori Watters. The ball trickled away from Milner after the second shot and she quickly smothered it, and players from both teams began running toward the other end of the field as if nothing had happened, but the referee instead stopped play and ruled the ball had crossed the goal line.
After that play, the teams combined for six yellow cards and one red card in the final 39 minutes. OC (0-5, 0-2) played the final 21 minutes a woman down after the red card and Rogers State took advantage, eventually finishing with a 31-8 edge in shots.
The Hillcats' final goal, by Hannah Mushisky, came in the 53rd minute.
OC's four shots on goal came from
Natalie Thomas,
Melisa Lopez,
Darrian Palacios and
Oby Okeke.
Milner's 10 saves were the second-most by a Heartland goalkeeper in 2018. Rogers State goalkeeper Taylor Sargent had four saves.
The Lady Eagles will be on the Heartland road next week, facing Dallas Baptist (Texas) on Thursday and St. Edward's (Texas) on Saturday.
