No. 6 in 2018 – White takes medalist honors at Heartland tournament

OC's Garrett White was the program's first conference individual men's golf champion in seven years.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 26, 2018) – Individual conference golf championships have been tough to come by for Oklahoma Christian through the years, but Garrett White made it look easy in April.

With a brilliant start and a strong finish, White took top honors at the Heartland Conference Championship at Slick Rock Golf Course in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, a result that ranks No. 6 on the list of top OC athletic stories in 2018.

White brought a sizable amount of course knowledge into the tournament, as he'd worked at Horseshoe Bay Resort for a few summers. He put it to immediate use, going 8-under-par – with four birdies and two eagles – in his first 10 holes, before cooling just a bit and finishing with a 2-under 70.

He improved to a 69 in the second round, leaving him in third place, two shots out of the lead. White started his final round on No. 10 and had two birdies in his first four holes. Playing the front nine, he had four birdies in six holes, a run that started with the par-4 No. 1 and ended at the par-4 No. 6.

He ended up with a bogey-free round of 66, putting him at 11-under 205 – good for a three-shot win. His 11-under score tied for the seventh-best score in relation to par in OC history and he became one of only three OC players to have twice posted a double-digit under-par score for a tournament, joining OC Athletic Hall of Famer Bruno Buccolo and three-time NCAA Division II All-American Sam Johnston.

White's league title was the first by an OC golfer in a conference tournament since 2011, when Preston Wilkins captured the Sooner Athletic Conference crown. White also became one of only three OC athletes ever to have won a Heartland individual title, joining cross country runners Roberto Diaz (2013) and Brennym Kaelin (2015).
