BETHANY, Okla. (Dec. 14, 2018) – The Oklahoma Christian-Southern Nazarene basketball rivalry is replete with mystifying results, and another was added to the list Friday night in the Sawyer Center.
Oklahoma Christian entered as the favorite, already with four wins away from home this season, and the Lady Eagles quickly jetted to a double-digit lead. But SNU, playing at home for only the second time this season, overcame both its sluggish start and 23 turnovers and used a strong second half to down OC 89-77.
It was only the second win for SNU (2-7) over OC (5-6) in the last seven meetings between the teams, with both of those coming in Bethany. OC lost despite a strong performance by
Addy Clift, who had 33 points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals. The senior guard has scored more than 30 points in three straight games.
OC's downfall was its defense, as the Lady Eagles gave up six and-one baskets to the Crimson Storm – SNU converted five of the free throws – and lost the rebounding battle 46-34. The Lady Eagles also hurt themselves by hitting only 18 of 34 free-throw attempts (52.9 percent).
The Crimson Storm started the game by hitting only one of their first 12 shots, and OC took advantage, going ahead 17-6 on a 3-pointer by
Maddison Collyer with 1:29 left in the quarter. SNU rallied to go up 36-29 late in the second quarter, but a flurry in the final 2½ minutes – during which Clift hit two long-range 3-pointers – pulled OC within 38-37 by halftime.
OC opened the second half on a 7-2 run and led 44-40 after a basket by
Carolyne Lawley at the 8-minute mark of the third quarter, but the Crimson Storm seized control of the game after that. A 12-4 run put the Crimson Storm up 52-48 and Irene Perez had 11 points in the final 3:38 of the quarter as the SNU lead increased to 65-54.
Consecutive three-point plays by Alexus Jones and Perez made it 73-58 and SNU's lead eventually peaked at 84-62 with 2:30 left before OC closed with a 15-5 run.
Perez finished with 26 points and eight rebounds while Adrienne Berry had 25 points for SNU. For OC,
Katie Mayo had 19 points, Lawley added 10 and Collyer had 10 assists to go with five points.
Clift's 33 points increased her career total to 1,638, moving her into fourth place on the Heartland Conference's all-time scoring list. She passed Erin Griffin, who had 1,631 points for St. Mary's (Texas) from 2000-04, and Amy Mueller, who had 1,637 points for Incarnate Word (Texas) from 2001-05.
OC will host Kansas Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m.
