OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 15, 2018) – After a disappointing loss at their archrival the night before, Oklahoma Christian was in dire need of a feel-good win, and that's exactly what the Lady Eagles got Saturday afternoon against Kansas Christian.
All 17 Lady Eagles who suited up scored and OC dominated from start to finish in a 99-21 rout of the Falcons in the Eagles' Nest, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Addy Clift (18 points in 14 minutes) and
Connor Atkinson (12 points in 13 minutes) led OC (6-6), which posted its largest margin of victory (78 points) since beating Arkansas Baptist 122-19 on Nov. 5, 2004.
The 21 points by Kansas Christian – a National Christian College Athletic Association foe that counted the game as an exhibition – matched the second-lowest total ever by an OC opponent, with only Arkansas Baptist in 2004 scoring fewer. OC beat Hillsdale Baptist (now known as Randall) 91-21 on Nov. 10, 2008.
Kansas Christian's three first-quarter points were the fewest allowed by OC in any quarter since women's basketball began using quarters with the 2015-16 season.
"We were a little bit down on ourselves after last night, so this is, I guess, a good way to bounce back and have a positive experience to kind of erase a little bit of that bad taste in our mouth," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said.
Unlike in an 89-77 loss at Southern Nazarene on Friday night, OC never let Kansas Christian (which suited up only seven players) rally after jumping out to a big early lead. Clift had 14 points as OC zoomed to a 28-3 advantage after one quarter. Atkinson had three of her four 3-pointers in the second quarter, helping OC build its lead to 54-7 by halftime.
"Connor is a junior-college transfer and has a lot of experience," Findley said. "We just need to start working her into that rotation and using her experience a little bit."
The Lady Eagles scored 21 straight points spanning the halves and the Falcons didn't reach double digits until 6:47 remained in the third quarter. By that point, OC was up 62-10.
OC's reserves closed the game out strong.
Crystal Bell, a freshman from Holden, Maine, knocked down three 3-pointers in as many fourth-quarter attempts for her first collegiate points. Freshman
Brennley Cloyd scored six points and sophomore
Rumer Howell and freshman
Bailey Stafford each scored their first points of the season.
"In the (high school) highlight film that I saw of (Bell), she hit a lot of threes, so that's something I felt like could benefit us, her being a spot-up 3-point shooter," Findley said. "She showed how she can do that and why she could be that kind of player for us."
Senior forward
Hannah Bentsen had eight points, two blocked shots and a career-high 12 rebounds as the Lady Eagles outrebounded Kansas Christian 62-34. OC also held the Falcons without a 3-pointer, as Kansas Christian missed all 18 of its attempts from behind the arc. The Falcons shot 9.4 percent (6 of 64) for the game while OC shot 53.5 percent (38 of 71).
Bentsen "was pursuing the ball … on rebounds. She got a couple of fouls because she was she was going after it so aggressively and that's something I want to see. We're not rebounding well against other competition and we need to start learning how to go get the ball. She did a good job of that today."
OC will return to action Monday, hosting Lone Star Conference power Eastern New Mexico, a team that is ranked fifth in the South Central Region.
