LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 10, 2018) – After Oklahoma Christian had led nearly the entire basketball game, Cameron pulled even with the Eagles for a third time with about 5½ minutes left on Saturday. Then OC's seniors took over.
Roderick Smith,
Braden Eggleston,
Will Lienhard and
Jordan Box combined to score 10 of the Eagles' final 12 points as they hung on to win 85-79 at Cameron's Aggie Gym. It was the first win for OC (1-1) in the four-year history of the Heartland-Lone Star Challenge and it came in the last game of the four-year contract between OC, Newman (Kan.), Cameron and Texas A&M-Commerce.
The seniors' fingerprints were all over the win. Box scored 21 points, including four clinching free throws in the final 16 seconds. Smith had 20 points, six rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots and (like Box) went 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.
Lienhard dominated on the boards for a second straight game, grabbing 13 rebounds (to go with the 21 he had Friday against Texas A&M-Commerce) and blocking a career-high six shots while scoring six points. Eggleston added eight points and eight rebounds.
Consecutive 3-pointers in the first three minutes by Box, Box and
Aubrey Johnson staked the Eagles to a quick 9-0 lead. OC led by as many as 11 points in the first half before settling for a 42-36 halftime advantage.
Twice in the second half, OC led by as many as 12 points, the latter time at 61-49 after a 3-pointer by Box with 13:32 left. But the Aggies gradually cut into that lead and tied the game at 67-67 with 7:28 left on a dunk by Dalton Vinson.
Cameron (1-1) also tied the game at 69-69 and 73-73, the latter coming with 5:23 left on a layup by Tyus Momoh. Smith answered with a jumper with 5:08 left and a layup by Eggleston put OC up 77-74 with 3:54 left.
After the teams swapped a pair of empty possessions, Vinson pulled the Aggies within 77-76 with 2:08 left. OC's
Brian Carey, who had 13 points and five assists, hit a jumper to make it 79-76, but Johann Tate hit two free throws for Cameron with 57 seconds left.
Carey missed a shot with 34 seconds left, but Lienhard rebounded and scored on a put-back. After Momoh missed at the other end, Box hit two free throws, and then two more after another miss by the Aggies.
Zachary Dumas led the Aggies with 17 points, but went just 6 of 19 from the field. Cameron hit just 26 of 71 shots (36.6 percent) while OC shot a healthy 56.1 percent (32 of 57). Momoh added 13 points and Tate, Jalen Nicholas and Vinson had 11 points each for Cameron, and Vinson also had 10 rebounds.
Marcus Blackwell scored 14 points for the Eagles.
OC will play its home opener on Tuesday, hosting Dallas Christian (Texas) at 7 p.m.
