OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 13, 2018) – Playing limited minutes due to foul trouble,
Aubrey Johnson didn't do much for Oklahoma Christian in the Eagles' first two games last weekend in Lawton, managing only a total of three points.
But his coming-out party was only delayed, not cancelled. The junior-college transfer from Mustang hit 8 of 15 3-point attempts and finished with 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists as OC rolled past Dallas Christian (Texas) 116-84 on Tuesday night in the Eagles' Nest.
"It was good to see Aubrey bounce back," OC coach
Cory Cole said. "He had a tough weekend. He's been working hard the last two days just to get his rhythm back. The shots were falling early for him and he just stayed aggressive the entire night and he showed his versatility. He's not just a shooter. He can do a lot of other things as well."
Johnson was the ringleader on a night when all 15 players who suited up for the Eagles scored. OC (2-1) scored its most points in a game since the Eagles beat Manhattan Christian (Kan.) 118-79 last Nov. 28. The Eagles shot 53.8 percent (43 of 80) from the field and moved the ball well, with 29 assists on those 43 baskets. OC also outrebounded the Crusaders 55-35.
"I love the adversity that Dallas Christian put us into," Cole said. "We had to battle and battle and make a run and get some separation. That's where this game served a good purpose."
Dallas Christian, a NCCAA member that treated the game as an exhibition, kept things interesting for a while against OC thanks in good part to the hot shooting of Kel Williams, who scored 27 points on 7-of-15 3-point shooting, including 18 in the first half. Williams entered the game averaging 10.3 points.
When Williams left the game after picking up his third foul with 2:59 left in the first half, OC led 49-40, but in his absence, the Eagles pushed that margin to 59-45 by halftime.
OC started the second half on a 10-3 run to build a 21-point lead and never was seriously threatened after that.
Roderick Smith, who scored 16 points, threw down a couple of alley-oop dunks, the latter in one-handed fashion off an assist from Johnson. Some longtime observers thought
the dunk ranked among the best in OC history.
"I was dumbfounded when I saw the toss," Cole said. "I'm thinking there's no way he's going to catch it, but he sprinted and got high elevation quickly and just threw it down. It was the best play of the year, the best play of my three years (here) that I've seen. A great catch and finish."
The Eagles hit triple digits on a reverse lay-in by
D.J. Walter, who scored 15 points. In the final minute,
Robert Gregg converted a three-point play,
Kamren Evans hit a technical free throw and
Harrison Martin made a layup, ensuring that every OC player who saw action scored.
For Dallas Christian, Jordon Watson scored 17 points and Davontee Brownlee added 15.
OC's next game will be a big one against the Eagles' archrival, at No. 5-ranked Southern Nazarene next Monday. The Eagles stunned then-undefeated SNU last season in what was the Crimson Storm's only loss in their first 22 games.
"I like that we have a lot of days to prep for it and just get a good, solid game plan," Cole said. "SNU presents so many different challenges. They're well-coached and they've got a lot of balance. They've got their whole team back. It is a rivalry game for us old-school guys. … We will have to play tough for 40 minutes. It's a game that means a lot. You want to be challenged early and Southern Nazarene is definitely that challenge."
