Lady Eagles build early lead, hang on to win at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas (Oct. 13, 2018) – Oklahoma Christian put a season of frustration, and years of frustration for the Lady Eagles against Texas A&M International, on pause on Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Soccer Field.

Lauren Parker and Denise Bennett each scored in the first 17 minutes and OC hung on the rest of the way for a 2-1 win over the Dustdevils. The decision ended the Lady Eagles' 17-game losing streak, gave them their first win ever in Laredo in six tries, improved their all-time mark against the Dustdevils to 2-8-1 and avenged a 4-0 loss to TAMIU in Oklahoma City earlier this season.

The win didn't come easy for OC (1-12, 1-9 Heartland Conference), as TAMIU star forward Cio Bargallo – last season's Heartland offensive player of the year – scored a goal and hit the post with another shot. OC goalkeeper Addison Milner made the defensive play of the game in the 77th minute, saving a penalty kick taken by Valeria Macias that would have pulled the Dustdevils even.

TAMIU (2-10, 1-9) outshot OC 17-9, but it was the Lady Eagles who scored on their first two shots. In the 11th minute, Parker, a senior midfielder from Stillwater, beat TAMIU goalkeeper Aubrey Hall with a shot from outside the penalty box. It was Parker's first goal during her three seasons at OC, after she scored three as a freshman at USAO before transferring.

Bargallo almost tied the game in the 15th minute with her shot that hit the post before Bennett, a freshman from Lewisville, Texas, put OC up 2-0 in the 17th minute, taking a pass from senior Darrian Palacios before firing past Hall.

OC's defense held up until the 62nd minute, when Bargallo collected a loose ball and scored her sixth goal of the season. A foul in the penalty box against OC gave Macias a prime opportunity to score, but Milner's save kept OC ahead and the Dustdevils managed only two more shots the rest of the way.

Milner, a junior from Corinth, Texas, made four saves for the Lady Eagles and now has a league-leading 91 this season, 30 more than the second-place goalkeeper on that list. Hall finished with five saves for TAMIU.

OC will return home next week for its final two home games of the season, against St. Edward's (Texas) on Thursday night and Dallas Baptist (Texas) on Saturday afternoon.
