Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 7, 2017) – For the first 64 minutes, Oklahoma Christian hung right with Lubbock Christian (Texas), keeping the potent Chaparrals' offense at bay. But the next nine minutes proved nightmarish for OC.
A three-goal outburst by Lubbock Christian during that span allowed the Chaparrals to exit the Eagle Soccer Field with a 3-0 win in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams.
Lubbock Christian (3-1, 1-0 Heartland) outshot OC (1-2, 0-1) by a 27-6 count, but the Lady Eagles' back line held its own in front of sophomore
Addison Milner, who made 10 saves – the most in a game by a Heartland goalkeeper this season.
"The girls competed in the first half," OC coach
Meagan Anderson said. "I felt the first half, we had the effort that we needed. We had the opportunities go a little bit better for us in the first half than in the second half. Momentum swung very drastically, very quickly and we never recovered from that first goal."
The game turned in the 65th minute, when what the Lady Eagles thought was a handball on a LCU player went uncalled. They let down their defensive guard for a moment in anticipation of the call that never came and Audra Park took advantage, blasting a shot from outside the penalty box high into the goal, well past the outstretched arms of Milner.
About a minute later, another OC defensive breakdown resulted in another LCU goal. Diana Sifuentes crossed the ball into the penalty box from the left side and Claudia Sanchez pushed it into the lower right corner of the goal to make it 2-0.
In the 73rd minute, Milner dove to save a close-in shot by Park, but Allison Scott was there to clean up for the Chaparrals and tap the ball into the net.
"We did not respond to that adversity very well at all," Anderson said. "That, I'm a little disappointed with. I think that we're better as a whole than that."
Dakota Milner recorded OC's only shot on goal, which LCU goalkeeper Hannah Wise saved in the 70th minute.
OC will return to nonconference action on Saturday, making the trip across Edmond to play local rival Central Oklahoma at 1 p.m. at UCO's Tom Thompson Field.
