Box Score BETHANY, Okla. (Sept. 2, 2017) – Twice, Oklahoma Christian rallied from behind to tie the soccer game on Saturday night at Southern Nazarene, but unfortunately had no chance to do it a third time.
Kylee Payne's blast from outside the penalty box in the fifth minute of overtime found the back of the net for a golden goal, lifting SNU to a 3-2 win over OC at Wes Harmon Field.
SNU (1-1) won for the second straight season over OC (1-1), but the Lady Eagles proved much more competitive than in 2016, when they fell 2-0 to the Crimson Storm.
Dakota Milner and
Brianna Concienne each scored a tying goal for OC in the second half to keep the Lady Eagles' hopes alive.
The Crimson Storm outshot OC 27-16, but OC held a 13-12 edge in shots during the second half and overtime. Both goalkeepers had high save totals – OC sophomore
Addison Milner with nine, SNU's Ashlynn Pritchett with eight.
SNU jumped ahead 1-0 in the 12th minute, when Kelsi Bussert's cross from the right corner found Rebekah Abrego, who scored from eight yards out. Concienne assisted on Milner's goal in the 59th minute that tied the game at 1-1.
Brianna Evans' shot from 16 yards out hit the crossbar and bounded into the goal, putting SNU back up 2-1 in the 73rd minute, but again OC had an answer. Milner played the ball through the middle of the field to set up a 1-on-1 between Concienne and Pritchett. The OC freshman just beat the onrushing goalkeeper to the ball and tapped it into an open net.
Concienne nearly won the game for OC in overtime with a shot that hit the post in the 93rd minute. But two minutes later, Payne scored on her long shot to end the game.
OC will open Heartland Conference play on Thursday, hosting Lubbock Christian (Texas), before making the short trip across Edmond on Saturday to visit longtime regional power Central Oklahoma.
