No. 5 St. Edward’s downs Lady Eagles

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 16, 2017) – Viktoria Malmros had a goal and an assist and No. 5-ranked St. Edward's (Texas) beat Oklahoma Christian 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Eagle Soccer Field.

St. Edward's (4-0-2, 2-0-1 Heartland Conference) hadn't scored a goal in its previous two games, but broke its scoreless streak in the 13th minute on a goal by Katherine Whitman. Malmros scored her goal in the 31st minute and then assisted on another by Whytneigh Duffie in the 38th minute, which deflected into the net off the right post.

The Hilltoppers led 4-0 after Dominique Giannini scored in the 68th minute. The Hilltoppers outshot OC 30-4.

"They are a really good team and we knew how they were going to be looking to play," OC coach Meagan Anderson said. "We did our best to counteract that and the girls played well. I told them after the game that I don't fault their effort. The girls did what we wanted to do as a team.

OC (1-5, 0-3) had its best scoring opportunity in the 59th minute. Kylee Ingalls shot from about 10 yards out was blocked by a St. Edward's defender who was called for a handball, giving the Lady Eagles a penalty kick. Lauren Parker took the kick for OC, but St. Edward's goalkeeper Ocoee Wilson dove to her left to deflect it.

Wilson had two saves for the Hilltoppers, while Addison Milner had seven saves for OC.

The loss ended a particularly challenging four-game stretch for OC, during which the Lady Eagles hosted the Heartland's three best teams – St. Edward's, Dallas Baptist (Texas) and Lubbock Christian (Texas) – and visited longtime Division II power Central Oklahoma.

"It was tough, the first little stretch (of the season) here, but I think the girls handled themselves professionally and have done well to understand what we're doing and where we've been," Anderson said. "Hopefully as we move into the next several weeks, we can get some positive results and positive feedback for the work that we've been doing."

The Lady Eagles' next six games will be on the road, starting with a trip to Laredo, Texas, for a game at Texas A&M International on Thursday. OC will visit St. Mary's (Texas) next Saturday.

"This next week is a lengthy trip, and then we come and we have a couple of short trips, then we go on the road for several more days," Anderson said. "It's going to be a rough stretch, because you're away from home, but I think it will be good to kind of get away and kind of just bond a little bit and learn about each other a little bit more."
