Late rally falls agonizingly short for OC against St. Mary’s

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 7, 2017) – A one-man show by St. Mary's (Texas) guard Will Ferguson proved just a little too much for Oklahoma Christian to overcome.

Ferguson poured in a career-high 33 points and St. Mary's barely held off a late rally by the Eagles to win 66-63 on Saturday afternoon in the Eagles' Nest.

Ferguson outdueled OC senior guard Keilan Horton, who continued his torrid shooting streak with 27 points – his seventh straight outing of 20 points or more. Horton had a pair of chances to score in the final 14 seconds, but his layup attempt in a crowd missed with about 6 seconds left, as did a rushed 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have forced overtime.

"Our guys are resilient," OC coach Cory Cole said. "We're learning through every possession, every game, just how to finish. Once we get that consistency, I like where we're headed."

St. Mary's (5-10, 3-3 Heartland Conference) looked to have the game in hand, leading 57-46 with 5:42 left, but Horton – now the Heartland's leading scorer – ignited an OC rally with a 3-pointer.

The Rattlers still led 64-59 with 1:25 left after a layup by Yanni Wetzell (14 points, 10 rebounds), but a put-back basket by Ivor Baric with 1:15 left and two free throws by Marcus Mathieu with 21.5 seconds left pulled OC (6-7, 1-4) within 64-63.

After a timeout, Ferguson traveled with the basketball with 14.7 seconds left. Horton drove toward the basket and didn't get a clear look on his layup attempt. OC's Dorian Lopez was called for a foul on the rebound and Dimitri Peterson made both free throws for St. Mary's with 4.4 seconds left, making it 66-63.

Without a timeout, OC rushed the ball downcourt and Horton got off a 3-point attempt, but it missed, leaving him 5-of-10 from behind the arc for the game.

"He's a special kid with a huge heart," Cole said of Horton. "He loves the big moment and always finishes. At the end of the game, we want the ball in his hands. We'll take that shot 10 out of 10 times. There's not a kid playing at a higher level than Keilan and he's only going to get better."

Horton hit three 3-pointers in a 71-second span in the first half to give the Eagles an 18-17 lead and the game was tied 30-30 at halftime. A 3-pointer by Lopez put OC up 40-35 with 15:23 left, but a 9-1 run by St. Mary's put the Rattlers ahead for good.

Only six players scored for St. Mary's. Senior center John Moon joined Horton in double figures in scoring for OC with 12 points, raising his career total to 1,632 points and moving him past Steve Dunn (1,625 points from 1985-89) into 15th place on OC's career scoring list.

Baric added a career-high 10 rebounds for OC.

OC will hit the Heartland road next week, with games at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Thursday and in-state rival Rogers State on Saturday.
