Energized Lady Eagles roll past Texas A&M International

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 22, 2016) – After a rough stretch during which it lost five straight games and played perhaps the Heartland Conference's top three teams on the road, Oklahoma Christian needed a momentum-shifting win.

That's what the Lady Eagles produced on a warm, humid night at the Eagle Soccer Field, recording season highs for goals and shots in a 4-1 rout of Texas A&M International. It was the most goals scored in a game by OC since a 4-0 win over Bethel (Kan.) early in the 2013 season.

Madeline Roseke, Rubi Villegas, Kylee Ingalls and Amanda Cooper each scored for OC (2-5, 1-3 Heartland), which picked up three points in the league standings with the win over TAMIU (0-7, 0-4). OC pressed the issue throughout the game, posting a sizable 32-8 advantage in shots.

After struggling in earlier losses to league foes Lubbock Christian (Texas), Dallas Baptist (Texas) and St. Edward's (Texas), OC coach Randall Robison was glad to see his team post a decisive win.

"The girls have worked hard," Robison said. "They've had a tough schedule – I tend to think the toughest opening in the conference. We had it all on the road, but we haven't really fallen back on that to be an excuse. They needed some success. To quote (longtime OC men's basketball coach) Dan Hays, they needed a feel-good win and I think that was."

All but two of the 13 field-position players who saw action for OC recorded at least one shot, and the two who didn't both recorded an assist. That aggressive approach took a while to pay dividends for OC, although Ingalls did get unlucky in the 11th minute, as her shot glanced off the post.

The Lady Eagles broke through in the 31st minute, on a play started by Sophia Brazil. She crossed the ball in from the left side and Darrian Palacios got a foot on the ball to re-direct it to Roseke, who tapped it past TAMIU goalkeeper Kiyana Lopez for her first goal since her freshman season in 2014.

"I thought Zeke had had an exceptional game," Robison said. "The first part of the year, she's stretched pretty thin. She had to work hard to honor all of her commitments. I've really been happy for her the last week. She got to start in Texas last week because she's earned it. She earned the start today, as well as her goal."

A defensive error by OC resulted in the Dustdevils' only goal, an 18-foot chip shot over goalkeeper Carina Schanz by Cio Bargallo in the 36th minute that tied the game. In the 50th minute, Bargallo had a one-on-one with Schanz, but her shot that could have put TAMIU ahead instead bounced off the left post.

Roseke drew a foul from TAMIU's Ana Jeronimo in the penalty box in the 55th minute, giving OC a penalty kick. Lopez saved Villegas' initial shot, but Villegas put away the rebound to give OC a 2-1 lead.

Ingalls headed in a free kick from near midfield by Courtney Hernandez in the 73rd minute, and Cooper sealed the win in the 86th minute, controlling a loose ball that had glanced off a defender following a corner kick by Lauren Parker and burying it into the net.

Schanz finished with five saves for OC, while Lopez had 10 for the Dustdevils.

OC will host Heartland foe St. Mary's (Texas) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
