Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 1, 2015) – Oklahoma Christian and Newman (Kan.) entered the season finale on Sunday afternoon with identical records and looking to move up in the final Heartland Conference standings.
It was Newman that did so, using a goal in the 81st minute by Madison Decker to post a 1-0 win over the Lady Eagles at the Eagle Soccer Field.
Newman (6-8-2, 3-4-1 Heartland) ended up sixth in the nine-team league by winning its final three games. OC (5-9-2, 2-5-1) would have moved up to fifth with a win over the Jets, but instead finished seventh.
OC's best chance to score in the first half came in the 38th minute, when Rubí Villegas Aguilar sent a shot from about 12 yards out high. The Lady Eagles' defense was solid, limiting Newman to only two shots.
But Newman, which outshot the Lady Eagles 15-14, began pressing the issue in the second half. OC goalkeeper
Carina Schanz was up to the task, making eight of her nine saves after halftime, a couple on shots from point-blank range. Schanz's save total was her second-highest of the season.
OC had a good chance to break the scoreless deadlock in the 77th minute, when Newman defenders blocked shots by Villegas Aguilar and
Courtney Nixon.
In the 81st minute, Decker took the ball, dribbled past one defender, then beat Schanz on a shot from about 15 yards out to give the Jets the lead.
The Lady Eagles managed three shots in the final minute, but two were blocked and one was wide. Newman goalkeeper Kayleigh Renfro finished the game with three saves.
Before the game, OC honored the Lady Eagles' five seniors, each of whom started the game –
Areli Bermudez Delgado,
Mackenzii Bieke,
Maicee Brinkman,
Alexis Farrell and
Samantha Kuneman.
