Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 1, 2015) – Even in defeat, Oklahoma Christian sent notice Thursday night that it won't be an easy mark, even against the best Heartland Conference opponents.
No. 25-ranked St. Edward's (Texas) needed a pair of late goals to squeeze out a 3-0 win over OC that probably was much closer than the Hilltoppers had expected to record at the Eagle Soccer Field. It was the closest OC had played St. Edward's since joining the Heartland with the 2012 season.
St. Edward's (5-2, 1-0 Heartland) scored in the opening minute on a 25-yard chip by Katie Donahue, but otherwise, OC (3-4-1) was even on the scoreboard against the Hilltoppers until the final 15 minutes.
St. Edward's did post a 17-6 edge in shots, but the Lady Eagles' attempts were mostly on goal, forcing the Hilltoppers' goalkeeper, Lorrie Santoy, to make four saves.
Meanwhile, OC goalkeeper
Carina Schanz made seven saves, keeping the Lady Eagles within striking distance most of the way. The Lady Eagles' best scoring chance came in the 64th minute on a shot by
Madeline Roseke, which Santoy saved.
Donahue hit the post in the 50th minute, but it wasn't until the 77th minute that the Hilltoppers gained any breathing room. Jennifer Boudreau dribbled down the left side of the field and shot from about 12 yards out, beating Schanz to make it 2-0.
In the 83rd minute, Schanz saved a shot by Boudreau, but couldn't control the ball and Morgan Palmer tapped it into the net to seal the win for St. Edward's.
OC will host the Heartland's other women's soccer behemoth, Dallas Baptist (Texas), on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
