Lady Eagles advance to championship

The eighth-ranked Oklahoma Christian women's soccer team advanced to the NAIA Region VI tournament finals by defeating archrival Oklahoma City 3-2 here Monday.

"We're just very happy to win today. This is an excellent OCU team we beat and they played really well today." OC head coach Sean O'Connor said.

OC will face College of the Southwest (N.M.), which beat Oklahoma Baptist in the other regional semifinal. The game is set for Wednesday afternoon at Oklahoma Christian (time TBA).

The Lady Eagles defeated the Stars for the third time in 2006 after winning the regular-season games 2-1 and 1-0, respectively.

In Monday's semifinal game, Oklahoma City jumped to an early lead when Sarah Leonard scored from the left side in the 11th minute.

OC tied the score at 1-1 in the 23rd minute when Stephanie Duncan sent the ball into the center of the field for Kristin Brown. Brown stutter-stepped by a Stars defender and left-footed the ball into the left side of the net. The goal was the 44th of Brown's career and 17th of the season.

The Lady Eagles took a 2-1 lead into halftime after Taryn Caylor scored off a Brown assist. The goal was the 26th of Caylor's OC career and 16th of the season.

OC extended the lead to 3-1 in the 68th minute when Caylor cleared the ball to Ashley Stevenson, who scored from 15 yards out.

OCU added another goal in the 77th minute when Leonard scored from the right side, but the Lady Eagles held on for the win.

The two goals by OCU was just the third time a team tallied more than one goal against the OC defense this season.

"We continue to get great defense from Jessica Ortman, Kassie Walker, Cassie Tyler, Alyssa McElvany and Lisa Jorgensen," O'Connor said.

The victory ran OC's team record-setting win total to 17. The team's overall record is now 17-0-2.

"We got off to a slow start, but the two first-half goals we had gave us a lot of momentum that carried us on to the victory." O'Connor said.
