Two second half goals powered the Oklahoma Christian University Lady Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Southern Nazarene University in the season opener for both schools in Bethany Aug. 31.
In posting the first career victory for coach Sean O'Connor, the Lady Eagles took an early lead on a goal by freshman Kendra Nummy six minutes before halftime. Nummy's first collegiate goal came off a short corner kick from junior Cassie Tyler.
Southern Nazarene's Lacey Reed tied the game in the 68th minute on an unassisted goal after evading a pair of OC defenders.
The Lady Eagles regained the lead in the 73rd minute on a short goal by sophomore Ashley Stephenson. Junior Taryn Caylor passed from the left side of the goal with Stevenson and freshman Stephanie Duncan in front of the frame. Stevenson and Duncan collided with an SNU defender but Stevenson touched the ball in for the score.
A minute later freshman Kelly Hlubek connected on a well-driven 25 yard shot. Caylor again provided the assist, crossing the field with a sharp pass from the sideline.
"This win feels good," O'Connor said. "This is a strong league and getting a win against a conference opponent on the road is pretty nice."
